πΎ Keeping Our Furry Friends Safe & Cosy This Autumn! ππ
As Halloween and Bonfire Night approach, the autumn festivities bring plenty of excitement for us, but for our pets, the loud bangs, bright flashes, and constant doorbells can be incredibly stressful π
Whether you have a dog, a cat, or small outdoor animals, a little bit of planning can make a world of difference. Here are a few simple ways to keep your beloved pets safe, calm, and comfortable over the coming weeks:
π Create a Safe Space:-
Set up a cosy, familiar hiding spot in a quiet room with their favourite blankets, bed, and toys. If your cat or dog decides to hide behind the sofa or under the bed, let them stay there, never force them out, as hiding is their natural way of coping.
πΆ Muffle the Spooky Sounds:-
Before the fireworks start and trick-or-treaters arrive, close all windows, doors, and curtains to block out the flashes and dampen the noise. Put the TV on or play some calming background music to help drown out the sudden bangs outside.
πΆββοΈ Walk Early & Stay Indoors:-
Make sure to take your dogs for their walks during daylight hours before it gets dark. Bring cats indoors early too, and remember to lock the cat flaps and secure all external doors so no one bolts out if they get spooked.
π¬ Keep the Treats Out of Reach:-
Remember that Halloween chocolate, sweets, and wrappers can be highly toxic to our pets (especially anything containing the sweetener xylitol). Keep the sweet bowls high up and well away from curious noses!
π¦ Check Your Bonfires:-
If you are building a bonfire at home, please remember that hedgehogs and other small wildlife love to nestle into piles of leaves and wood. Always give the pile a thorough check right before lighting it to ensure no little creatures are hiding inside.
π Stay Calm and Reassuring:-
Our pets take their cues from us. Try to stay relaxed, maintain your normal routine where possible, and offer gentle comfort or a favourite distraction (like a stuffed treat toy) if they seek your reassurance.
π Set Up Calming Plug-Ins Early:-
Consider using a plug-in diffuser in the room where your pet spends the most time. An Adaptil Diffuser is fantastic for dogs as it releases comforting mother-dog pheromones, while a Pet Remedy Diffuser uses a natural herbal blend (like Valerian) that instantly calms all household pets, including cats and rabbits.
Both Adaptil and Pet Remedy are excellent, highly recommended calming plug-ins for pets. While they both tackle stress and anxiety from fireworks or loud noises, they work using completely different scientific methods.
You can find a quick comparison with indepth details of the two products online to see which one would be most suitable for your household dynamics.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Adaptil if: You have a single dog who suffers from intense noise phobias or separation anxiety, and you want an odourless solution backed by extensive clinical trials.
Choose Pet Remedy if: You have a busy, multi-pet home (e.g., both dogs and cats) that you want to soothe simultaneously, or if you need an affordable, fast-acting solution.
How to Use Them Effectively:
To get the absolute best results for Halloween or Bonfire Night, follow these placement rules:
β’ Leave them on 24/7: Do not unplug them at night or when you leave the house. They require a continuous slow release to maintain a calm environment.
β’ Pick the right location: Plug the diffuser into a low-level socket in the room where your pet spends most of their time (like near their bed or "safe haven").
β’ Avoid blockages: Keep the space above and around the plug clear. Never place a diffuser under a window, behind curtains, or underneath low furniture, as this blocks the vapour from spreading.
P.S. If your pet suffers from severe firework anxiety, it is well worth having a quick chat with your vet ahead of time to discuss calming aids or extra support.
Letβs look out for all our animal companions so everyone in the neighbourhood can have a safe and peaceful season! ππΆπ±π
