Skin fold dermatitis refers to an infection in a pocket between two folds of skin. These pockets tend to get warm, which creates a cosy home for bacteria.

It is most common in overweight animals (that develop skin folds due to their weight), short nosed dogs with folds above their noses due to extreme conformation such as the British Bulldog or Pug and dogs with wrinkly skin such as the Shar Pei.

Treating skin fold dermatitis involves regular cleaning, reducing inflammation and sometimes we will prescribe antibiotics/anti-yeast treatment.

If you have concerns about your pet's skin folds, please give us a ring and we can advise the best way forward.

🐶 How to Give Eye Drops to a Dog
Dogs are often more tolerant than cats but may still pull away.
✅ 1. Get Set Up
• Choose a calm area with good lighting.
• Have treats ready and wash your hands.
• Larger dogs may do best sitting; smaller dogs can sit on your lap or a table.
🐕 2. Gently Restrain
• Stand or sit beside your dog.
• Place one arm around the dog’s neck for gentle control.
• For wiggly dogs, you can back them into a corner or have a helper steady them.
👁️ 3. Open the Eye
• Use your non dominant hand to hold the muzzle lightly and tilt the head upward.
• Use a finger to pull down the lower eyelid, creating a small pouch.
💧 4. Apply the Drops
• Hold the bottle close but do not touch the eye or eyelashes.
• Squeeze one drop directly onto the surface of the eye or into the lower lid pouch.
• Allow your dog to blink; this distributes the medication.
🎉 5. Reward and Encourage
• Give praise and a treat right away.
• Many dogs respond well to a routine—same place, same words, same reward.
🧼 General Tips for Both Pets
• Never touch the eye with the bottle tip—it can introduce bacteria or scratch the cornea.
• If multiple eye medications are prescribed, wait 5 minutes between drops.
• Wipe away any discharge with a damp, clean cotton pad (one pad per eye).
• If your pet becomes highly stressed, stop and try again later—slow is better than a struggle.
• Always follow your veterinarian’s exact instructions regarding dosage and frequency.

EASY, ACCURATE, CONVENIENT RESTING RESPIRATORY RATE TRACKING AT HOME

Resting respiratory rate (RRR) is one of the simplest and most reliable ways to spot early progression towards heart failure. To make this easier for pet owners and clinically helpful for us we recommend the free My Pet’s Heart2Heart app.
This app helps pet owners accurately record their dog’s RRR at home and has the ability to share key trends with your practice, supporting earlier intervention and better ongoing monitoring.

Why use the app?
- Help identify early changes in dogs with heart disease
- You can track your pet’s RRR with a few taps of a smartphone
- Simple setup and easy-to-understand results
- The app compares RRRs over time
- Results can be emailed directly to the practice

🐾 Guide to Administering Eye Drops to Cats and Dogs
Giving eye medication can feel challenging, but with calm handling, preparation, and the right technique, most pets tolerate it very well.
🐱 How to Give Eye Drops to a Cat
Cats can be wiggly and sensitive around their faces, so patience is key.
✅ 1. Prepare the Environment
• Choose a quiet, well lit room with minimal distractions.
• Gather supplies: eye drops, a towel, treats, and clean hands.
• Warm the drops slightly by holding the bottle in your hand for 1–2 minutes.
🐈‍⬛ 2. Position Your Cat
• Place your cat on your lap or a stable surface.
• If your cat resists, wrap them gently in a towel burrito to keep paws contained.
• Sit behind your cat for support and to steady their body.
👁️ 3. Hold the Head Steady
• Use your non dominant hand to cradle the cat’s head from above.
• Rest your hand gently on top for stability—don’t squeeze.
💧 4. Apply the Drops
• With your dominant hand, hold the bottle close to (but not touching) the eye.
• Use your thumb or finger to gently raise the upper eyelid.
• Place one drop in the eye, aiming for the center or inner corner.
• Let your cat blink; blinking spreads the medication.
🎉 5. Praise and Reward
• Immediately reward with treats, petting, or play.
Positive reinforcement makes next time easier.
