It was a pleasure to support a student placement within a daycare environment this week and contribute towards their learning and development. The daycare team provided an excellent work experience opportunity, creating a welcoming, supportive, and hands-on learning environment where the student could build confidence and gain valuable practical skills. 🐾 Children, Dogs & Our Responsibility 🐾

Recent changes to legislation regarding exempted XL Bully-type dogs have brought renewed attention to an important topic: the safety of children around dogs.

Whilst the legislation applies to specific dogs, the wider message is one that applies to all dogs, regardless of breed.

No dog should be left alone with a child!

Not because dogs are “bad”.

Not because children are doing anything wrong.

But because both dogs and children rely on adults to advocate for their safety, wellbeing, and welfare.

Children are still learning how to interact with the world around them. Dogs are individuals with their own emotions, needs, preferences, and limits. It is our responsibility to support both through appropriate supervision, guidance, and understanding.

Many incidents involving children and dogs occur within familiar environments, often involving dogs that are known and loved by the family.

From a welfare perspective, supervision is not about expecting something to go wrong.

It is about recognising situations where dogs may be more vulnerable, uncomfortable, startled, or simply in need of space.

This includes:
🐾 Interactions around food, treats, and chews
🐾 Approaching dogs whilst they are sleeping or resting
🐾 Times when a dog is unwell, injured, or feeling overwhelmed
🐾 High-arousal situations such as play or excitement
🐾 Any interaction where a dog may be unable to comfortably move away

Dogs communicate with us all the time, but their communication is often subtle. By learning to recognise those signs and remaining actively involved in interactions, we can help prevent situations from escalating and create safer outcomes for everyone involved.

Creating safe interactions isn’t about fear.

It’s about understanding.

It’s about respecting canine communication, supporting children to interact appropriately, and recognising that supervision protects both the child and the dog.

☀️ Warm Weather Enrichment Ideas ☀️

During warmer weather, many dogs benefit far more from calm enrichment and mental stimulation than long walks or high-energy exercise. 🐾

Enrichment can help reduce frustration, encourage natural behaviours, support emotional wellbeing, and provide appropriate stimulation without placing additional physical strain on dogs during hotter conditions.

Some simple warm weather enrichment ideas include:

🐾 Frozen lick mats
🐾 Stuffed Kongs or enrichment toys
🐾 Scatter feeding in shaded areas
🐾 Snuffle mats and scent work
🐾 Frozen fruit treats suitable for dogs
🐾 Paddling pools or supervised water play
🐾 Calm chew activities
🐾 Cardboard shredding and problem-solving games
🐾 Short training sessions using reward-based methods
🐾 Allowing dogs time to rest and decompress

Not every dog enjoys or copes with heat in the same way. Puppies, elderly dogs, flat-faced breeds, anxious dogs, double coated breeds, and dogs with underlying health conditions may struggle more quickly in warmer temperatures.

Sometimes slowing things down, reducing expectations, and focusing on calm welfare-led activities can be one of the kindest things we do for our dogs. 🤍

If your dog appears unwell, distressed, excessively lethargic, or shows signs of overheating, veterinary advice should always be sought.

☀️ Warmer Weather Reminder ☀️

With the warmer weather expected next week, it’s important to remember that heat can become uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for dogs much quicker than many people realise. 🐾

Dogs cope with heat very differently to us and can struggle to regulate their body temperature, especially during exercise, within enclosed spaces, or in highly stimulating environments. Even temperatures that may feel manageable to people can become overwhelming for some dogs.

A few gentle reminders during the warmer weather:

🐾 Walk dogs during the cooler parts of the day
🐾 Always provide access to fresh water and shaded areas
🐾 Be mindful of hot pavements and artificial grass, which can burn sensitive paw pads
🐾 Allow dogs time to properly rest, cool down, and regulate after activity
🐾 Watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, drooling, slowing down, vomiting, confusion, collapse, or distress

On hotter days, calmer enrichment-based activities can often be far more beneficial than long walks or intense exercise. Snuffle mats, frozen enrichment, scent work, scatter feeding, lick mats, chew activities, and calm mental stimulation can help meet dogs’ needs without placing additional strain on them. 🤍

Not every dog copes with heat in the same way. Puppies, elderly dogs, brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, overweight dogs, double-coated breeds, dogs with underlying medical conditions, and dogs already coping with stress or anxiety may find warmer temperatures much harder to manage.

If your dog becomes unwell, appears distressed, or you have any concerns regarding overheating or heatstroke, veterinary advice should always be sought as soon as possible.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do during warmer weather is slow things down, lower expectations, and simply allow dogs the opportunity to rest, regulate, and feel comfortable within their environment. 🐾☀️

Wishing the high school students the very best as they begin their work experience placement Barks Allowed after completing the Welfare-Led Canine Behaviour and Bite Prevention for Work Experience Students & Volunteers session 🐾🤍

Working within a daycare environment is about much more than simply spending time with dogs. It’s about understanding canine behaviour, recognising body language, supporting safe interactions, and helping create an environment where dogs feel safe and supported.

The session introduced students to key topics around welfare, behaviour, safe practice, and compassionate handling within professional care settings. Even small introductions to welfare-led practice can help build confidence, empathy, and safer interactions around dogs — both within work experience and everyday life.

It’s always lovely to see opportunities being created that encourage young people to learn about animal welfare while gaining practical experience within the industry 🐶✨

I hope the knowledge shared helps support the students throughout their placement and gives them a positive insight into welfare-focused canine care.

A huge well done to a local kennels team for completing our Welfare-Led Canine Behaviour and Bite Prevention staff training session, followed by an additional discussion session focused on applying that knowledge within real-life kennel situations, decision making, and staying in line with licensing standards. 🐾

Working within a kennel environment can be physically and emotionally demanding, both for staff and for the dogs within those settings. Many dogs entering kennels may be coping with stress, uncertainty, overstimulation, frustration, or the emotional impact of sudden change and unfamiliar environments. Sometimes this can present through heightened arousal, shutdown behaviours, reactivity, or difficulties coping day to day.

Because of this, understanding behaviour should never be about judgement or punishment — it should be about understanding what the individual dog may be experiencing beneath the surface and adapting how we handle and support them accordingly. Not every dog copes in the same way, and recognising those individual needs can make a huge difference to both welfare and safety.

It was really positive to have open discussions around how small changes in handling, environment, routine, and approach can help dogs feel more secure and better understood within kennel settings. 🤍

It’s always encouraging to work with teams who genuinely want to continue learning and improving standards — creating calmer, safer, and more compassionate environments for the dogs relying on them every day. 🐾

🐾 Why Some Dogs Struggle to Settle at Home

If your dog follows you from room to room, reacts to every noise, struggles to rest during the day, or always seems “on edge” — you’re definitely not alone 🤍

A lot of owners worry they’re doing something wrong, but sometimes dogs just genuinely struggle to fully relax in their environment.

Busy households, inconsistent routines, constant stimulation, lack of proper rest, or always anticipating what’s happening next can leave some dogs finding it hard to switch off.

And just like us, when dogs become overtired or overwhelmed, it can affect how well they cope emotionally day to day.

Often, it’s the small changes that help the most:
✔ Predictable routines
✔ Quiet spaces away from activity
✔ More opportunities for proper rest
✔ Slower, calmer transitions throughout the day
✔ Less pressure to constantly interact or “do” something

Not every dog needs more stimulation — some dogs need support learning that it’s okay to relax. 🐾🤍
