I’m not actually sure we talk about this enough, especially considering how much stuff is now sitting inside it!

For £25 a month, you get access to a growing library of training content covering scentwork, life skills, gundog training, puppy raising, troubleshooting and plenty of raw, unedited training sessions with our own dogs too. Because sometimes seeing the bits that don’t go perfectly is just as useful as seeing the finished product!

There are currently 56 video tutorials in the membership, with new content being added all the time.

But probably one of the biggest parts of the membership is the feedback. You can submit as many training videos as you like for us to have a look at and help you troubleshoot. And if you have multiple dogs, you DON’T need multiple memberships. Your £25 covers you and all of your dogs.

You’ll also get free access to our ebooks, plus discounts on selected workshops and other training.

It’s a really nice addition if you already come to classes and want a bit more support between sessions, but it’s also a great option if you can’t currently make regular in-person training and still want somewhere to learn, ask questions and get feedback.

Sometimes taking a break is the best thing you can do 💭

We put so much pressure on ourselves, especially as trainers, to prove ourselves - to compete, to win, to get the medals and the rosettes, but sometimes it’s fine to take a break

Life’s been throwing some curveballs so I’ve made the decision to take a break from competing recently. Not because my dogs aren’t capable - I’m sure they’d still do amazing. But because I don’t think it’s fair to expect anything from them when I can’t also give 100%!

My dogs have done more for me in their lives than I had ever dreamed of 🫶. Their trophy room is their proof! They don’t need to prove anything else…

Now this doesn’t mean we aren’t training - we absolutely are. But we are also using the opportunity to just enjoy life, to go on day trips, to go into the hills, to learn tricks, build foundations and have fun!

We say it time and time again to our clients if they are having a blip - if it stops being fun - stop competing and work on building that relationship and enjoyment - the rest just falls into place as they are all so talented 🫶

Use your time in life to do what makes you happy, what makes your dogs happy, never feel like you have to do anything for someone else and remove expectations. I promise, you’ll remember them memories over a medal or rosette any day 🥰 (and bonus, the more of this you do, the more likely your dogs are to perform when you want them to 🤭)

When does learning become information overload?

There is SO much dog training information available to us now, and honestly, I think that’s mostly a brilliant thing.

We can learn from different trainers, different methods and different perspectives, and I absolutely don’t think anyone should only ever listen to one person.

But I do think there’s a point where consuming too much can make training harder rather than easier.

I did exactly this with Nero.

Before I really started getting somewhere with him, I was learning from loads of different sources and trying lots of different things. Not because any of that information was necessarily wrong, but because I wanted to help him and I was constantly looking for another piece of the puzzle.

The problem was, I wasn’t always giving myself enough time to see what was actually helping.

Sometimes different pieces of perfectly good advice don’t fit particularly well together. Sometimes we change something before the dog has had a chance to understand it. And sometimes we end up questioning ourselves so much that our training becomes less clear.

With Nero, things started making much more sense when I slowed down, looked at the dog I actually had in front of me and became more thoughtful about what I took from different places.

I still learn from loads of people. I still change my mind. I still add new things to my training.

But I don’t feel like I need to try everything anymore.

Learning is brilliant.

Sometimes we just need to give ourselves enough space to actually use what we’ve learned.

One thing I don't think gets talked about enough in the dog training world is just how valuable a good demo dog is.

A dog that can walk into a lesson, work in a completely new environment, around unfamiliar dogs and people and reliably demonstrate exactly what you're trying to teach is worth their weight in gold.

Could I stand and explain a handling technique for ten minutes? Absolutely!

Or, I could show you once with one of my own dogs, let you see the timing, the body language, the mechanics and the outcome and suddenly it all clicks.

Dogs don't read textbooks and sometimes people don't learn best from them either.

Seeing a skill happen in real time often answers questions people didn't even know they had. Clients can watch exactly where I'm standing, how I'm moving, when I'm rewarding, what the dog is doing and, just as importantly, what I'm not doing.

It's why I put so much time into training my own dogs. They're not there to show off. They're there to teach.

Every one of them has a different personality too. Magnus is thoughtful and methodical. Marvel is fast, driven and full of enthusiasm. Maple makes me think carefully about pressure and communication. They all have something different to teach, both me and my clients.

The better my dogs become, the better I can explain training to other people!

Week 1 of the Magnus K9 weekly training challenge 👊🏻

This weeks challenge is to leave your dog with a tasty treat, ask them to leave it, then leave the room for 60 seconds and come back in. If they’ve left it, they can have it 🥰 or alternatively you can give them an even bigger reward 🎉

I’ve decided to add in weekly challenges for people to have fun with their dogs with no pressure, just fun challenges that you can work on in your own time!
