Please note our next flock meeting on Pre-tupping will still be going ahead next week, but we will now also be adding in a section about Blue tongue and fertility, plus a Blue Tongue Q+A.

We are seeing a large increase in suspected and confirmed cases of Bluetongue in our area.

Please see the below link for the NSA webinar tomorrow evening.

Cases of bluetongue virus (BTV) are rapidly increasing in both sheep and cattle. Clinical signs appear to be more severe than previous years, resulting in high mortality in sheep.

NSA is urging sheep farmers not to be complacent but to follow the lead of growing numbers of farmers and speak to their vets about assessing the risks of BTV-3 in their flocks and taking action to protect animals.

Blue Tongue

We have now had multiple confirmed cases within our clients’ farms. It appears BTV is a significant issue this season and the only current protection available is vaccination (which can take up to 4 weeks for immunity!). Case reports mean that vaccine orders are increasing rapidly, and while there are no manufacturing issues, increase demand means that there may be slight delays in delivery, as such we are strongly recommending to protect your flock as soon as possible.

Blue tongue is spread by biting midges – can be transmitted directly from animal to animal (rams/bulls—> ewes and cows!) but does not pose a risk to human health or food safety, however it is a notifiable disease and early recognition is vital.

Signs of Blue Tongue:
Sheep – often more severely affected
Facial swelling
Ulcerations of the hard palate
Drooling
Lameness
Difficulty breathing
Sudden death
Cattle
• Fever
• Lethargy and depression
• Reduced appetite
• Milk drop
• Redness, swelling or ulcers of mouth, muzzle and nostrils
• Excessive salivation
• Nasal and eye discharge
• Teat lesions
• Abortions, still births or deformed calves.
• Calves born blind

Vaccination protocols are a one off injection for sheep, with cattle needing two injections 3 weeks apart.
