A Terrifying Tale From Theo🖤🐩
Last week Theo & Quinn were in for boarding with us, our two lovely Standard Poodle boys that have walked with us since PP began and have gained many fans and fame on our page over the years⭐️
It was the last night of their stay when Theo started heaving & his stomach had ballooned in a short period of time so we rang the out of hours vets around 8pm
His last walk was at 2pm and all dogs were fed at 5:30pm, their usual meals at the usual time & symptoms didn’t start until hours after tea time
The vet on the phone advised what we feared that he was developing Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV) so we made the quick decision to rush him in and he was given emergency surgery shortly after as his stomach had twisted
GDV or ‘Bloat’ is something that we are very conscious of which is why we follow such strict feeding times around exercise and walk times. I never could have imagined a dog could get bloat just from inhaling too much air whilst eating their tea🤯
We’re sharing this to raise awareness that this can be a life-threatening emergency and I don’t think it’s something people often ‘believe in’ & you certainly don’t expect it to happen to you! I personally have heard of other friends large breeds losing their lives to GDV but this was my first experience of witnessing it first hand
You definitely don’t expect it in an 11 year-old dog who had been walked way over the guideline time before feeding, not an overly bouncy dog, one that hadn’t been playing in the garden, and isn’t an overly greedy boy as he can sometimes graze feed. However.. large, deep chested breeds are more prone to this and can become more prone as they get older. It doesn’t just effect large breeds either⚠️
Theo thankfully is a tough cookie and is recovering well at home with his brother & amazing Pawrent who has been so supportive in this terrifying experience for all of us and we’re looking forward to seeing him again later this month where I’m sure I’ll be on pins🤗🙈😂
If in doubt, take them straight to the Vets as time really is of the essence during a GDV emergency❤️🩹🏥🐾
