How do I know when a dog is ready for e-collar conditioning? 👇🐾
Before I introduce an e-collar, there are 3 things I want to have in place:
1️⃣ A solid reward marker
The dog understands their reward marker and knows exactly what it means. Clear communication is key to effective training.
2️⃣ An understanding of leash pressure
The dog knows how to yield to leash pressure and turn it off by responding appropriately. They understand how to respond to pressure rather than simply fighting against it.
3️⃣ A clear understanding of the behaviour
The dog already understands the behaviour I intend to pair with low-level stimulation. I’m not using the e-collar to teach a behaviour the dog doesn’t know; I’m layering it onto an existing foundation.
E-collar conditioning isn’t where training starts. It’s a process that should be built on clear communication, established behaviours and a solid foundation.
The tool is only as good as the training behind it. 🐕
