Humans are bad at understanding dog behaviour...
As a professional dog trainer, when I look at some of the videos online? I see a dog screaming for help in a language his humans don’t speak and neither do the people in the comments.
I’m Jessica, founder of Tricks and Treats, and I’m kicking off a mini-series to officially welcome you to my page. I’m going to make a bold statement: Most dog behavior problems aren't actually dog problems, they’re actually human translation problems.
Dogs are constantly talking to us with their tails, their eyes, and their posture, but we suck at reading the signs so the dog is forced to growl or bite to get our attention.
I built this page to change to give you the exact tools, science, and breakdowns you need to finally understand what your dog is trying to tell you, so follow along.

I’m on the lookout for new, safe walking spots around West Yorkshire that I can do my dog training on. I work with a lot of reactive dogs and I wanted to know which parks/trails/walks would you recommend?

This weekend Pig joined the training family to work on impulse control and reactivity towards siblings when over stimulated!

Something new and exciting is coming soon to Tricks and Treats! I’ve just got this wonderful machine so I can start designing personalised items for you and your dog - from name tags to harness patches and so much more.

My question to you is: What would you like to see?

If you’re dreading your dog walks, get anxious when you know the postman’s going to come knocking, or are just exhausted feeling like you’re fighting with your dog all the time because they won’t listen or are pulling you along… then let’s have a chat.

Cause let’s be honest here, you’ve been dealing with this a while and your walks are starting to feel like a military operation where you’re scanning for threats, hoping your arm isn’t going to be pulled out the socket. And it shouldn’t be like that, for you or your dog.

Bribes aren’t working, not even the fancy chicken treats anymore and something has got to give. This is where I come in; I come out to you for a free in-home assessment and tailor a plan for the dog and the owner in front of me. I only do custom training plans, I don’t do generic packages or one-size-fits-all approaches. Every dog is different, set with their own traits and experiences of the world, so why wouldn’t the training be completely unique?

As a balanced dog trainer, I use positive reinforcement and rewards to build an unbeatable bond, but I also introduce clear, fair boundaries so your dog actually understands what "no" means. We tackle the root cause of the reactivity, build real impulse control, and teach your dog how to make better decisions on the lead.

I have 3 spots open in June for new dogs to train with me. This is your sign to DM me to see if we would be a good fit to work together.

You've got a perfect "sit" in the kitchen, but the moment you're out and about, your dog acts like they've never heard their own name. Here's 3 reasons your dog is ignoring you…

1. The "Distraction Jackpot": In your kitchen, you are the most interesting thing. At the park? A squirrel, a discarded chip wrapper, and a Golden Retriever 50 yards away are all way more exciting than a dry biscuit. You have to compete with the environment.

2. Lack of "Generalisation": Dogs don't struggle with a command itself; but they struggle with the difficulty of it in a new context. Think of it as the 3 D's:
• Distance – how far away from you can they still hold it?
• Duration – how long can they hold it?
• Distraction – can they hold it when something exciting is happening nearby?
You have to build each of these up slowly, in lots of different places, before they truly "know" the skill.

3. Jumping Too Far, Too Fast: The most common mistake is increasing the difficulty of training too quickly. Add 30 seconds, not 10 minutes. Move a couple of steps away, not across the room. Push too hard in any of the 3 D's and you're setting your dog up to fail. Build in baby steps and you'll be amazed at what they can do.

Pro Tip: Start in the house. Then the driveway. Then the pavement. Then a quiet corner of the park. Earn each environment before moving to the next — don't go straight to the field of distractions!

"He's Friendly!" are the two most stressful words you can hear on a dog walk.

You’re walking through your usual park, your dog is having a blast on his lead, snffing here and there when you see it…

A dog at full tilt, charging from 100 yards away. No owner in sight. Then, a faint shout from over the hill: "DON'T WORRY! HE'S FRIENDLY!"

This is a stressful situation and not just for you as the dog owner, but for your dog too, especially if you’re training them. But it’s all about being the advocate your dog needs. If a dog is ambushing you, you shouldn’t be waiting to see if they’re actually friendly.

How do you handle the "Friendly" ambush? Choose your style and let me know in the comments: 👇
1. The Body Blocker: You calmly but firmly step between the dogs. You are the shield.
2. The Voice of Command: A loud, deep "STOP" or "STAY" to the approaching dog. It works more often than you’d think!
3. The Treat Scatter: Throwing a handful of treats at the newcomer to buy yourself a 10-second exit window.
4. The Honest Shouter: "Please get your dog! We are training/ we need space!"

Which one are you? Or do you have a secret move #5? Let’s talk about it in the comments! 👇
