Is not to use the E Collar.

Sounds a bit backwards doesnโ€™t it.

But if youโ€™re having to press the button every 5 minutes, every walk, every distraction, then the dog hasnโ€™t really learnt anything.

The E Collar shouldnโ€™t be doing the training for you. Itโ€™s simply a way of communicating with your dog at distance and reinforcing things they already understand.

The aim is always to build reliability so that the collar becomes less and less relevant.

Eventually it just becomes insurance.

Because no matter how well trained a dog is, theyโ€™re still a dog. They can get things wrong. They can make bad decisions. They can get caught up in instinct.

Maybe a deer pops out. Maybe a rabbit bolts across a field. Maybe something happens that youโ€™ve never come across before.

If your dog suddenly decides chasing that deer is the best idea theyโ€™ve ever had and heads straight towards a main road, itโ€™s nice knowing youโ€™ve got a way of getting through to them before it turns into a disaster.

The best E Collar trained dogs arenโ€™t the dogs constantly being corrected.

Theyโ€™re the dogs that know exactly whatโ€™s expected of them and rarely need it at all.

This beautiful boy is with me to work through his reactivity towards other dogs.

Rexโ€™s mum is in a similar position to where I was and has already been to several trainers but unfortunately the reactivity is just getting worse.

Before we start working through that, weโ€™re going to focus on getting Rex safely off lead. Being a GSD, itโ€™s hugely important that he has somewhere to put all that drive and energy.

Too often we focus on stopping unwanted behaviours without looking at whether the dogโ€™s actual needs are being met first.

Once weโ€™ve got him safely off lead and given him an outlet, weโ€™ll see whatโ€™s left of the reactivity and tackle that from there.

Really looking forward to working with this boy and his Mum!

Stay tuned for his progress ๐Ÿ‘€

The charity neutral walk is going ahead as planned this Sunday!

There are still a few spaces available if youโ€™d like to join us.

All dogs are welcome. Itโ€™s a great way to start your Sunday morning, work on your dogโ€™s training, meet like-minded people, and raise money for a great cause.

You can book your place here:

Convince your dog that every dog they see is there for them.

If you have a hyper-social dog that loses their head around other dogs, has zero manners and pulls you halfway across a field to get to another dog, they do not need access to more dogs.

In fact, they need the opposite.

They need doggy rehab.

Cold turkey on the dogs.

Until they have learnt to cope, throwing them into situations where they continue to meet more dogs just allows them to rehearse the behaviour over and over again.

And the moment they canโ€™t get to another dog?

Barking.
Lunging.
Frustration.

Congratulations.

Youโ€™ve just turned your friendly dog into a reactive one.

All in the name of โ€˜socialisationโ€™.

The 18-month-old Labradoodle who has joined me to work through his frustration-based reactivity.

Tim likes to make his feelings known when he canโ€™t get access to other dogs, and at home heโ€™s started showing some guarding behaviours around the sofa.

Over the coming weeks, Tim will be working through my behaviour modification programme and Iโ€™ll be sharing his journey with you all. Stay tuned!

Iโ€™m sure everyone recognises this golden boyโ€™s face by now. As one of my very first clients, heโ€™s been part of my journey as much as I have his and has become a part of my life.

Youโ€™ve heard me talk about his progress for months, but now itโ€™s time to hear it from the person whoโ€™s lived every step of it โ€“ his mum.
