There are sooo many myths floating around surrounding puppy grooming and when a puppy should have their first groom.

It’s understandably confusing with such contradictory advice but the most important thing is to get your new pup introduced to the grooming environment asap, we normally recommend as soon as they are fully vaccinated.

No matter what breed, coat or grooming style you want for your puppy, introducing them to grooming as soon as possible enables them to have a stress free grooming life with confidence built from a young age.

Severe matting can be uncomfortable for dogs, and in some cases a full shave is the safest and kindest option. Once the mats were removed, this lovely dog could start fresh with a healthy coat care plan.

Your puppy’s first groom is about so much more than just getting tidy. It’s their introduction to being handled, hearing new sounds, standing on the grooming table, and learning that grooming can be a calm and positive experience.

Taking things slowly during those early appointments helps build confidence and can make future grooming visits far less stressful for your puppy as they grow.

Which brush is which for each dog coat type? 👀

It can be confusing standing in the pet shop looking at rows of brushes that all claim to do the same thing… but using the right brush for your dog’s coat really does make a difference.

Slicker brushes are great for curly and longer coats as they help remove tangles and loose hair before matting starts.

Pin brushes work well for longer flowing coats and are gentler for regular maintenance brushing.

Rubber curry brushes are ideal for short-coated dogs and are brilliant during shedding season to lift loose hair.

Undercoat rakes can help remove trapped undercoat in double-coated breeds, but they should be used carefully and not excessively.

And one of the most important tools of all? A metal comb. If the comb can’t glide through the coat easily, there are still tangles hiding underneath.

Using the correct tools makes grooming more comfortable for your dog and far more effective for you.
