LUGA
Luga is a 7-year-old neutered dog looking for a loving new home, as his foster family are sadly no longer able to adopt him.
His story
Luga came into Drue after a late-night call from a vet asking for help with treatment costs for bladder stones. His initial surgery was successful, and he recovered well in foster care. In April, he began having trouble urinating again. Tests showed a blockage in his urethra, and after an urgent attempt to flush it failed, he underwent surgery to create a new opening so he could urinate properly.
Medical needs
• Luga has now been diagnosed with mild DCM.
• His Demodex has cleared, but some of his hair has not yet grown back, so he will need protection from strong sun on warm days.
• He is on a freshly prepared diet to help prevent bladder crystals from returning, and his new owner will need to continue this routine. Full guidance will be provided by his current foster carer.
• Drue will cover all medical costs related to his Demodex should anything arise, his bladder condition and DCM.
Home needed
We are looking for someone who can offer Luga a kind, stable home where he can enjoy a happy and carefree life. Although he is not reactive to other dogs and generally ignores them, we are unsure whether he would be happiest living with another dog, his foster family have said he could possibly live with a bitch.
Support for adopters
We understand that adopting a dog with additional needs is a significant commitment. However, Luga’s foster family have shown that it can be done, and Drue will continue to support his adopter. If you can offer him the home and care he deserves, we would love to hear from you. Below are some words from his foster mum.
Home life
• Luga is very easy to live with. He is affectionate, friendly, and calm, although he will bark at squirrels, pigeons, or other animals he spots outside the window.
• He does not jump up at worktops or tables and does not beg for food.
• He does not guard his food.
• He is happy to be handled all over and cooperates well when being dressed in a coat or having something put on him.
• He has been left alone for a couple of hours and simply sleeps, so he may be able to manage longer periods once settled.
• He has basic training and has also learned new commands. He is clever and willing to learn.
• He will bark at the doorbell, but he greets visitors politely.
• He sleeps through the night in the bedroom, although he is an early riser.
• He travels well in the car.
Walks
• Luga generally walks well, although he can pull when he gets excited.
• He ignores other dogs when out and about.
• He has not been let off lead in public places.
Garden behaviour
Luga can still become quite overstimulated when off lead in the garden. His foster carer believes this may be because he previously spent long periods indoors and had limited experience of being outside.
He will chase anything that moves, including cats, pheasants, squirrels, and even bees, so he has been muzzle trained to help protect wildlife. Once he has his favourite toy, however, he usually settles and plays happily without much distraction.
