Yesterday at the market, someone made a comment to me that has really stayed on my mind.
They told me they would never purchase food made in someoneās home kitchen and that a home-based business isnāt a āreal business.ā
Everyone is absolutely entitled to decide where they feel comfortable purchasing their food. I completely respect that. ā¤ļø
But I also think this is a wonderful opportunity for a little educationāand, more importantly, an opportunity to stand up for all of the hardworking people running businesses from their homes.
A home-based business is still a REAL business.
Behind that kitchen table, spare bedroom, garage, craft room, or home oven is someone purchasing supplies, paying fees, following applicable laws and regulations, creating products, answering messages, taking orders, keeping records, attending markets, packing vehicles, setting up displays, cleaning up afterward, and often doing all of it while also working another job and taking care of a family.
There are countless talented bakers, makers, artists, crafters, photographers, designers and entrepreneurs who startedāor continue to operateāright from their homes.
For those of us who produce cottage foods, there are laws and labeling requirements that govern what we can make and sell. Being home-based doesnāt mean that someone simply decided to bake something in their kitchen one morning and call themselves a business.
I am incredibly proud of Sweet & Sourdough By Julie. I may not have a storefront, and my breads, cookies and cakes may come from my home kitchen, but the love, time, investment and work behind every single item are very real.
So the next time you meet someone running a business from their home, even if their product isnāt for you, please remember that the person standing behind that table is likely working incredibly hard to build something of their own.
Support them. Encourage them. Share their post. Recommend them to a friend. And never make them feel that what theyāve built somehow matters less because they donāt have a storefront.
To every home baker, crafter, maker and small-business owner building a dream from wherever you can:
Your business is real.
Your hard work is real.
And what youāre building matters. ā¤ļø
Iām proud of you and Iām proud to be one of you.
