Breeding and Ethics
🌿About Me
- I'm NFRS registered and a MRC member and am very active in the fancy.
(The NFRS maintains a list of its studs and ratteries as a convenience but doesn't endorse any stud, rattery or member. Therefore it accepts no responsibility for any rats, including rescues, homed by me)
- I'm studying Animal Welfare and Behavior and am passionate about ethical animal care and husbandry.
🌷Breeding Practices and Plans
I will be keeping small scale, with minimal litters a year and will be mainly breeding to keep great pets for myself and furthering my line. I will not breed for demand or profit; they are my pets first and I will only home out when surplus kittens are available .
I will be breeding prioritising great temperament and health whilst looking for good type. I will be working towards Russian Blue/Russian Blue Agouti in Silken and related varieties in Top Ear and Dumbo. As well as RussianSilver in standard coat and top ear.
🍂Housing & Care
-I live in my family home and as the rats are my pets they are kept and bred in my bedroom, this means I do not allow set up viewing in person, but I am happy so send any pictures of the main set up and kittens housing. I am also happy to show littermates and parents when collecting.
- My girls live in a double SRS 95 with a dropped perspex base and my boys live in a single SRS 95..
-Their cage has a deep layer of safe woodshavings, they have a Perspex shelf that I add different safe substrates too for texture change. It is highly enriched with hammocks, hides, ropes, platforms, branches and puzzle toys. They have multiple water bottles and a water bowl I often add extra vitamins to.
-I feed my rats a homemade mix based on the Shunamite diet, they also get occasional wet meals consisting of fresh veg and protein.
-They get free roam in a large, paneled play pen.
-I have great accesses to veterinary care including exotics specialists.
🪻Raising and Homing the Litters
They will be born In a birthing cage (medium hamster cage) and will be reared in there for the first 2-3 weeks unless prompted to use smaller cage to aid mum, they will then move to a small rat cage at least 80 x 80 x 50cm when and then split into sexes at 5 weeks old to avoid unwanted pregnancies, the girls will stay with mum.
- They will not be homed out younger than 8 weeks.
- They will go in minimum pairs to homes with rats already
-minimum trios for first time owners.
-I require proof of set up and diet, I won’t home out without it
-I will not home out rats to people who have not researched beforehand, although I am happy to answer questions about rat care and give links and resources. I understand you cannot know everything straight way, but there is a basic level of care that needs to be understood before taking on rats.
- I will only home to 18 +, I if you are underage permission from parents or guardians is required and an adult must be present to collect.
-My rats must not be bred from, if you have been found to have bred from my rats you will be blacklisted from my rattery and I will warn others.
-As I have already stated my rats are my pets and I truly care for their welfare, I believe anyone can give them amazing homes, but I have full right to not home to you if you don’t meet my standards.
-I need to be kept updated around every 6 months on how they are doing as well as any health issues that may occur.
-If you can no longer care for the rats I homed to you for whatever reason, please contact me and we will discuss the next steps but in most cases, I will be happy to take them back.
-I do not cull or home euthanize.
