This beautiful pidge died in my hands.
I know that birds can fly at cars and wildlife can run into the road and in some cases there is nothing that can be done.
The car that hit him could have safely slowed, allowing him time to fly away. Instead the driver continued on his journey and ploughed into him as he tried to take flight. Rolling around in the road, other cars drove over him. There was no time to get him to a wildlife rescue. He passed in my hands. At least not having the fear of cars carelessly continuing to drive at him while he died.
I see this too often.
Please treat them with kindness.
I've witnessed countless people drive over pigeons that are stunned in the road. On roads where it is safe to slow, stop and move them. I do it, so they could have.
We domesticated pigeons.
Because we domesticated them, these beautiful birds lost their natural fear of humans. They trust us.
They acted as extremely reliable messengers, saving tens of thousands of lives during World War I and WW II.
These birds were deeply respected. As radios and digital communications rendered them obsolete, many of the domesticated birds were abandoned.
They're beautiful creatures and they get such a raw deal. Please, treat them kindly. If they're feeding in the road, give them the time to fly away. If they're stunned and you can safely stop, move them to safety.
Treat them kindly.
