At Boomerang Dogs, we don’t just teach the “how to” of Loose Lead Walking. 🐕

We know you’ve googled it, asked friends, Facebook groups “hoooow do I stop my dog pulling?!” And we get it, it’s frustrating and having your arm pulled out of the socket is no fun. 😩

So imagine how frustrating and painful this can be for your dog too be pulling excessively too! 💡

It’s all well and good teaching a dog to walk nicely next to you, but can they functionally do the behaviour we’re asking of them? 🤷

❓Do they know where their feet are?
❓Can they move their body around you?
❓Can they change direction without getting all tangled in the lead?
❓Can they adjust their pace to yours?

This is where Proprioception and body awareness comes in. 🤸‍♂️

So we don’t just teach the dog the behaviour. We make sure that they have all the skills to be able to physically do it. 💪

Because good train ing isn’t just about getting the dog doing what WE want. It’s about making sure they can DO it. ✅

Our Boomerang Dogs all had a fun proprioceptive, body awareness class last week, and have homework to practice at home to build the skills needed for loose lead walking in the real world 🌍

Plenty of distractions at the island, but they all absolutely smashed their session. Fantastic engagement, disengagement and settling practice from everyone. Well done guys! 👏

These are sessions we put on weekly, in different locations in and around Cardiff for our members to put their skills into practice around real life distractions, with a trainer there to help and guide you through any struggles you’re having 🧑‍🏫

We don’t believe that learning should only take place in the classroom. We want you and your dog to have results everywhere you go together 🛣️

What’s that?…socialising is not the same as being well socialised? 🤔

We have SOOOO many puppy owners who are desperate to socialise their puppy with as many dogs as they can. But, how would you feel if we told you that just isn’t the answer to a well socialised and well rounded dog? 💡

A well socialised dog feels comfortable and confident in our weird human world.

They are:

Is your dog travelling safely in the car ? 🚙

You may not put a lot of thought into your dogs car travel, maybe you just pop them in the boot or put them on the backseat and clip them in, or not?!

But what happens if you have to break suddenly? Or worse, are involved in an accident? 💥

An unrestrained dog can be seriously hurt in an accident, as well as causing injury to anyone else travelling in the car 🤕

What does the UK law say? 🇬🇧

The Highway Code says that dogs should be suitably restrained while travelling in a vehicle.

It specifically gives examples including a seatbelt or harness, pet carrier, dog crate or dog guard.

What do we recommend at Boomerang Dogs? 🐶

A wire crate or harness that has not been crash tested is unlikely to be able to give your dog the protection needed. Wire crates can also be rattly and cause stress to dogs who are noise sensitive…and drivers who don’t want to hear jingling on every journey 🙋‍♂️

Ideally, look for equipment that has been crash tested, is comfortable for your dog and suitable for your car.

TransK9 crates are independently crash tested for front and rear impacts, as well as drop testing, and are specifically designed to fit into individual vehicle models.

Some other things to consider when travelling with your dog 🚗

🩵 Never allow your dog to travel loose in a vehicle
🧡 Don’t let them sit on your lap, or in the footwell of your car
🩷 If your dog is travelling in a crate, remove their collar and harness before closing the crate door. Collars, harnesses, tags and clips can potentially catch on parts of a crate. If a dog becomes caught and panics or struggles, there is a risk of injury or strangulation.
💛 Ensure there is adequate ventilation and airflow
💜 For longer journeys, plan regular toilet, exercise and water breaks
💚 Give your dog enough room to stand, turn around and lie naturally
