You must dust live reptile food with calcium powder because feeder insects completely lack the proper nutrients your reptile needs to survive.
Think of bugs like crickets and mealworms as empty fast-food wrappers. In the wild, reptiles eat a massive variety of insects packed with diverse nutrients. In captivity, their diet is limited, and captive-bred insects are naturally very low in calcium and extremely high in phosphorus. This bad ratio forces you to step in as a chef and supplement their meals.
Here is the breakdown of why this extra step is non-negotiable.
🚫 The Threat of MBD
✨️Without enough calcium, a reptile's body faces a major crisis. To keep its heart beating and muscles moving, the body will literally steal calcium from its own bones. This triggers Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). MBD causes horrible, permanent issues:
💚 Rubbery, soft jaws that make it impossible to eat
❗️Twisted, deformed spines and legsShattered, fragile bones from minor movement
💚 Severe muscle tremors, seizures, and eventual death
❗️ How to Dust (The Shake-and-Bake Method) Don't just pour powder into the reptile's tank. It makes a mess and doesn't guarantee they actually eat it.

☀️ The Vitamin D3 Rule Calcium alone isn't always enough. Reptiles cannot actually absorb calcium without Vitamin D3. If you use high-quality UVB lighting: Buy pure calcium powder without D3. Your reptile naturally makes its own D3 from the light. If you do not use UVB lighting (or have nocturnal species): You must use calcium powder with D3 added to it. To give your pet the ultimate health boost, look into gut-loading. This means feeding highly nutritious vegetables to your insects for 24 hours before you feed those insects to your reptile.
Would you like to know the exact weekly schedule for alternating between calcium, D3, and multivitamins for your specific reptile species?
