In 2024, I fostered a dog who will always hold a special place in my heart.
Marcie came into rescue after being found dumped. I still remember admitting and assessing her when she first arrived. Despite the pain, neglect and suffering she had endured at human hands, her tail never stopped wagging
What none of us realised then was that she would spend almost a year in rescue recovering
Her eyes had severe ulcers, leaving her with only around 5% vision, and both ear ca**ls had to be removed. Yet none of that defined her.
Marcie was one of the happiest, gentlest and most placid dogs I’ve ever known. She had every reason to be fearful, angry or withdrawn, but instead she chose trust
Teaching her sign language and watching her learn to navigate the world despite her disabilities was incredible
Handing her over to her forever owner was one of the hardest parts of fostering. You pour your heart into these dogs and then have to let them go, hoping someone else will see just how amazing they are
But that’s the thing about fostering. It’s hard. Really hard. Yet it’s also one of the most important things you can do.
Marcie taught me that the things we often worry about in life are insignificant compared to what some animals endure and overcome. She showed me resilience, forgiveness and unconditional trust
I’ll never forget her, and I’ll always be grateful that for a small part of her journey, I got to be her person
Fostering saves lives. And sometimes, the dog you save ends up changing yours too 🐾❤️
