🐾🤍 MEET DR MICHELLE 🤍🐾

If you’ve been following Paws At Rest for a little while, you may have noticed another lovely face appearing alongside mine — so it’s well overdue that I properly introduce Dr Michelle Broderick 🌿

Michelle has been working alongside me since spring, helping us care for more families across Cornwall, Plymouth and South Devon while keeping Paws At Rest exactly what I always wanted it to be: personal, gentle and completely unhurried.

And I feel incredibly fortunate to have found her.

Michelle was born in South Africa to an Irish father and Welsh mother, and apparently announced that she wanted to be a vet before she could even talk! She went on to study veterinary science at Onderstepoort, University of Pretoria, before moving to the UK shortly after qualifying.

She has now been a veterinary surgeon for more than 23 years, with a career spanning mixed practice, small animal medicine and mobile veterinary care. She is also a qualified veterinary acupuncturist, with a particular interest in pain management, quality of life and palliative care — experience that fits so beautifully with what we do.

Most importantly, Michelle shares the values at the heart of Paws At Rest. She understands that these visits aren’t something to rush. That sometimes we sit on the floor. Sometimes we talk and laugh about the ridiculous things your pet has done over the years. Sometimes there are lots of tears. And sometimes families just need a little more time 🤍

Since joining us, Michelle has already had the privilege of helping so many beautiful pets have their final moments peacefully at home, surrounded by the people they love.

Paws At Rest may be growing, but the kind of care we provide never changes. Every family is still cared for personally, every pet is treated as though they were our own, and Michelle and I work closely together behind the scenes throughout their care.

So, if Dr Michelle is the vet who comes through your door, please know that you and your precious companion are in very kind hands 🐾

I’m so pleased to finally introduce her properly.

Welcome to Paws At Rest, Michelle 🌿🤍

🌳🐾 DID YOU KNOW?

For every cremation we arrange at Paws At Rest, we plant a memorial tree in your pet’s memory 🤍

Whether you choose *individual or communal cremation*, your pet’s tree is included as part of our aftercare, at no additional cost.

We choose beautiful, wildlife-friendly varieties that will grow, flower and provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife 🐝🦋🌸 — allowing each little memorial to bring new life to the world around it.

Once planted, we’ll share the location of your pet’s tree with you, so you have somewhere you can visit in the future — a little place in the world where their memory continues to grow 🌱

We love staying in touch with the families we care for. Returning ashes is never something we see as the end of our time together, and perhaps this is another little way for us to say “see you soon” rather than goodbye 🤍

We currently have many very special trees waiting to go into the ground. There has been a little hold-up with planting, but please know they haven’t been forgotten 🌳 We’ll be in touch with each family once their pet’s tree has been planted, sharing its location so you can visit if you would like to.

Over time, we hope these trees will grow into something really beautiful — a living legacy for all the precious pets we’ve had the privilege of caring for 🤍

Because their lives leave footprints long after we say goodbye 🐾🩷

With warmth,
Kate, Michelle & the Paws At Rest team 🐾

Quality of life
One of the hardest parts of loving an animal is knowing when they’re struggling.
Our pets are incredibly stoic - they hide pain, push through, and try their best for us right until they can’t anymore. I once knew a kelpie who worked a full mob of cattle with a fractured leg… that’s how strong their instinct to “keep going” can be.

But behind that bravery, ageing bodies tell the truth.
A dog of 7 is already middle-aged.
At 10, they’re like a human in their 60s.
By 14, they’re in their senior years - and decline can be surprisingly fast.

If you’re unsure whether it might be time, or if something feels “off,” speak with a vet. Sometimes the signs they show at home are just the tip of the iceberg.

As a vet, I never want to miss an animal in pain, or even daily discomfort. I always work from a place of compassion: assume discomfort, support wellbeing, and honour their quality of life. They give us everything — the least we can do is make each day as gentle as possible

When Love Means Letting Go 🕯️

There comes a moment when our greatest act of love is giving our pet peace.
At home, surrounded by familiar scents, their favourite spot, and the people who have loved them most — it’s where goodbyes can be gentle, and love can linger a little longer.

Every family I meet reminds me that saying goodbye doesn’t have to happen in a clinic or under bright lights. It can happen on a soft bed, in the garden, or by the fire — quietly, peacefully, and with deep respect.

If your heart is starting to wonder when it might be time, please know you’re not alone. I’m here to guide you through each step — with compassion, understanding, and care.

How Paws At Rest Gives Back 💙

At Paws At Rest, it is always an honour to care for families and their beloved pets during such tender and meaningful moments. What you may not know is that by choosing us, you’re also helping us give back to the community in special ways.

Through our work, we are proud to:
🐾 Support a local dog rescue, giving dogs in need the chance of a brighter future.
🌿 Plant a tree in memory of every pet cremation entrusted to us, creating a living legacy for each precious life.
💙 Contribute to research and support for children living with rare and severe gastrointestinal conditions – a cause deeply personal to me, as it is part of my own family’s journey and my son’s future.

As a small, family-run business, we are dedicated not only to supporting families through loss, but also to making a positive difference in the wider community.

Thank you for allowing us to walk alongside you and your beloved pets 🐾💜

With warmth,
Dr Kate

A Different Way to Say Goodbye 🌿

When the time comes to say goodbye to your beloved pet, the setting and the support can make all the difference.

Many families tell me they simply can’t face going back to their regular vet practice after a euthanasia — even when everything has gone well. The weight of that memory lingers. Sometimes the vet doesn’t know your pet, and that can feel impersonal. Other times, they do — and that familiarity can make it even harder.

From a vet's POV, I can honestly say that performing euthanasias in a clinic setting is one of the hardest parts of the job. It’s not fair on anyone — not the pet, not the family, and not the vet trying to do their best in a space & rushed setting, that was never designed for such a delicate goodbye.

✨ In-home euthanasia offers something softer:

No car rides or waiting rooms.

No pressure to keep it together in public.

No lingering sadness attached to the vet you still need for your other pets.
Just a peaceful space, familiar smells, and time to hold them in your arms.

I’m Dr Kate — a vet with over 12 years of experience and a heart that’s very much in this. I had a less-than-ideal goodbye with my own dog (Ruby, in featured photo) and I still remember how that felt. That experience has stayed with me, and it’s why I do this — to make sure no family ever has to feel the same.

I treat every pet as if they were my own. I listen, I bring time, and yes — I bring chocolate too (because who on earth thought it was a good idea to make two of the best things on the planet — pets & chocolate — a toxic combination?!).

Your pet’s final moments should be filled with calm, kindness, and love — and I’m here to help you make that happen, however that looks for you.

With years of experience behind every gentle goodbye.

Paws At Rest began as a dedicated in-home euthanasia service in Australia, where Dr. Kate compassionately supported countless families through one of life’s most tender moments — saying goodbye to a beloved pet.

Now settled in Callington, Cornwall, for family reasons, Dr. Kate is honoured to offer this trusted service to her new local community. While Paws At Rest may be new to the UK, her mission remains the same:
💛 To provide calm, dignified, and loving end-of-life care for cherished pets — in the comfort and privacy of home.
