🐾 Please let your dog sniff 🐾

I overheard something today that really stood out.

A lady was walking her dog off lead. Another gentleman had his dog on lead and chose to cross the road because his dog can sometimes feel uncomfortable when another dog gets too close.

The lady apologised, which was fair enough.

But then she said:

“I should have him on lead really, but I just can’t be doing with all the stopping for sniffing.”

And I get it.

Sometimes walks can feel slow. Sometimes you just want to get from A to B. Sometimes you feel like you have only moved three metres in ten minutes because your dog has found the world’s most interesting blade of grass. 😂

But sniffing matters.

To our dogs, sniffing is not them being awkward.

It is not them wasting time.

It is not them being stubborn.

Sniffing is information.

It is how dogs read the world.

While we look around and take things in with our eyes, dogs gather huge amounts of information through their nose. Who has been there, what direction they went, whether another dog was nearby, what has changed, what is interesting, what might feel safe or unsafe.

A walk without sniffing is a bit like taking someone to a museum and telling them they are not allowed to look at anything.

Yes, lead walking skills are important.

Yes, there are times when we need our dogs to move on.

Yes, dogs should be under control, especially around other dogs, people and roads.

But sniffing should be part of the walk.

For many dogs, a good sniffy walk can be calming, enriching and mentally tiring. It gives them choice. It gives them an outlet. It helps meet their needs.

And when we meet our dog’s needs better, we often get better behaviour in return.

So rather than seeing sniffing as the thing that ruins the walk, try seeing it as part of the walk.

Some parts can be for walking nicely.

Some parts can be for training.

And some parts can simply be for your dog to be a dog.

Let them sniff.

Their nose is not getting in the way of the walk.

For your dog, it is the walk. 🐶

🐾 Why I love teaching a hand touch 🐾

A hand touch is one of those behaviours that looks really simple on the surface, but it can be incredibly useful in day-to-day life with your dog.

The idea is simple:

You give your cue, offer your hand and your dog moves towards you to touch their nose to your hand.

But once your dog understands it, it becomes a really versatile skill.

You can use a hand touch to:

🐶 Move your dog without needing to physically guide them
🐶 Help redirect them away from something they’re unsure about
🐶 Reduce jumping up by giving them something else to do
🐶 Build confidence around new objects or environments
🐶 Bring their focus back to you
🐶 Help with loose-lead walking and position changes
🐶 Make recall-style behaviours more fun and engaging

In this video, you’ll see touch being used from a bit of distance, almost as an alternative to a recall.

Instead of just calling the dog back and hoping for the best, we’re giving them a clear, simple job:

Come and touch my hand.

That makes the behaviour easier to understand, easier to reward, and often more motivating for the dog.

It’s one of those skills I teach in a lot of my classes and 1:1 sessions because it can be used in so many different ways.

Simple behaviour. Massive value. 🐾

🐾 Struggling with your dog’s recall? 🐾

You call them back…

They look at you…

They think about it…

Then they carry on sniffing, run over to another dog, chase something exciting, or come back just close enough to make you think they’re coming in… before dancing away again. 😂

Sound familiar?

Recall is one of the most important behaviours we can teach our dogs, but it’s also one of the easiest ones to accidentally weaken.

That’s why this our Recall Masterclass is held over 2 x 60-minute sessions, giving us time to work through the early foundations properly, then come back the following week to check progress, troubleshoot what’s happening, and build the recall further.

Across the two sessions, we’ll look at:

🐶 Why your dog may not be coming back when called
🐶 How dogs actually learn recall
🐶 Building value in your recall cue
🐶 Helping your dog come all the way back in
🐶 Reducing the “stay away” game
🐶 How to progress recall around distractions
🐶 Using food, toys and movement effectively
🐶 Meeting your dog’s needs so recall becomes easier
🐶 Why coming back shouldn’t always mean the fun ends

This isn’t about shouting louder, repeating your dog’s name 15 times, or hoping they suddenly decide to listen.

It’s about helping your dog understand that coming back to you is worth it.

📍 Location: Greenmount, BL8 4DB
📅 Dates: Saturday 5th & 12th September
⏰ Time: 9:00am
💷 Price: £50 covers both sessions

If your dog’s recall disappears around distractions, if they keep playing “catch me if you can”, or if you simply want to build a stronger, more reliable recall, this masterclass is for you.

🐾 Looking for a local dog walker in Tottington, Greenmount, Ramsbottom, Hawkshaw or the surrounding areas? 🐾

Hi, I'm Paul, owner of Paul's Dynamic Dogs.

I know how difficult it can be to trust someone else with your dog. They're not "just a dog", they're part of the family.

That's why every walk I provide is about far more than simply exercising your dog.

I'm an IMDT Accredited Dog Trainer and have also been assessed by the IMDT, and the LCA, as a Professional Dog Walker. That means I don't just walk dogs, I understand them.

I spend my days reading body language, recognising when a dog is feeling worried, excited or overwhelmed, and adapting each walk to suit the individual dog and group in front of me.

Whether your dog loves an adventure, prefers a slower sniffy walk, or just needs someone who understands them, my aim is always to make every walk enjoyable, enriching and as stress-free as possible.

If you're looking for a reliable, experienced and knowledgeable dog walker in Tottington, Greenmount, Ramsbottom, Hawkshaw, Holcombe Brook or Bury, I'd love to hear from you.

Have a look through my reviews to see what other guardians have said about their experience with Paul's Dynamic Dogs, then drop me a message if you'd like to chat about how I can help.

Because every dog deserves someone who understands them, not just someone who holds the lead. 🐾

LAST FEW PLACES LEFT 😊

🐾 Easy Peasy Puppy Course – New Intake Starting Soon! 🐾

Got a new puppy and want to get their training off to the best possible start?

Our next 6-week Easy Peasy Puppy Course starts on Sunday 02nd August at 9:00am in Greenmount, Bury, BL8 4DB.

Now, I know this course falls during the school holiday period, and lots of families may have days out, weekends away or holidays booked. But don’t let that put you off.

Each class is followed up with an email containing videos of the behaviours taught that week, so even if you miss a session, you’ll still receive the training information and can practise at home when you’re back.

Across the course, we’ll cover key puppy training foundations, including:

🐶 Recall
🐶 Loose-lead walking foundations
🐶 Focus around distractions
🐶 Settle work
🐶 Confidence building
🐶 Handling foundations
🐶 Leave-it
🐶 Safe, structured social learning

The aim isn’t to create a perfect puppy overnight, because puppies don’t work like that. The aim is to help you understand how your puppy learns, build confidence together, and create good habits that will support you both as they grow.

If you’re looking for puppy classes in Bury, Greenmount, Tottington, Ramsbottom or the surrounding areas, this is a great way to give your puppy the best start in life.

And don’t just take my word for it, have a look at the reviews left by previous puppy class attendees and see what they had to say about their experience with Paul’s Dynamic Dogs.

Spaces are limited, so drop me a message if you’d like more information or click the link to book your place.

On the 4th October we are running Manchester Half to raise money for an amazing charity, Joe’s Buddy Line.

Joe’s Buddy Line are a charity helping to promote and protect the mental health of young people throughout England and Wales, which is something very close to our hearts.

Minus the blisters, many tears and potential A&E trip for a knee/hip replacement, every step will be absolutely worth it whilst honouring an incredible charity

With that in mind, we would really appreciate any kind words, support or donations to help and keep us going on the day

Your support means the world x
