LUCA - What an absolute transformation. Going from reactivity and aggression both inside and outside the home to calmly ignoring high-stimulation triggers is a massive achievement. This level of progress doesn't happen by accident—it takes incredible consistency, patience, and a deep understanding of what drives a Border Collie.
Here is a celebration of Luca’s journey and the incredible and necessary bond We’ve built together:
Luca: The Blue Merle Maverick
Luca is beautiful to look at with his striking blue merle coat and intense Border Collie focus, he stands out which actually made things more difficult out in the environment because he always drew a crowd which Luca ultimately couldn’t manage. He was a dog overwhelmed by the world around him.
For a high-drive breed like a Border Collie, fear or overarousal can easily translate into reactivity. Inside the home, visitors and boundary lines felt like threats; outside, the noise, movement, and unpredictability of other dogs and people triggered a defensive spike. Every walk was on high alert, and every encounter felt like a potential conflict.
Training a reactive dog isn't about "fixing" them—it's about teaching them how to process the world without feeling the need to control or defend against it. Through dedicated, structured training, Luca learned a whole new language of composure.
What Changed?
Lowering the Threat Level: Luca shifted from viewing people and dogs as immediate threats to recognising them as background noise.
Building Impulse Control: Instead of reacting on instinct, he learned to channel his natural focus back to me, choosing neutrality over escalation.
Mastering High-Stimulation Environments: Being able to ignore triggers in chaotic, busy settings is the gold standard of reactivity training. It shows true emotional regulation, not just passive submission.
Neutrality is the ultimate flex.
A dog doesn't need to love everyone or play with every dog they see. For Luca, ignoring people and dogs in high-stimulation environments is a triumph of confidence and trust. He no longer feels the weight of having to manage his surroundings because he trusts my guidance to keep him safe.
Weve worked tirelessly together with hundreds of repetitions, managing space, marking the right decisions, and never giving up. Luca's gorgeous blue merle coat might catch people's eyes first, but his quiet confidence and cool composure are what truly make him remarkable today. I wouldn’t say Luca’s perfect But he’s come such a long way, I feel so very proud of him ❤️
