A huge congratulations to Laura and Charlie on their wedding on Saturday. I hope you both had the most wonderful day and enjoyed every second of it.

I also want to say a very heartfelt thank you for asking me to be a small part of such a special day by being Henry’s wedding chaperone.

I first met Henry when he was just four months old, and over the past year I’ve been lucky enough to watch him grow from a little puppy into the very lovely, very excitable and very strong boy he is today. So when Laura and Charlie asked if I would look after him at their wedding and help make sure he could be part of the celebrations, I was genuinely so excited to say yes.

The whole day was beautiful. The setting was incredible, made even more special by how much the place means to them, and it was so lovely seeing Henry surrounded by so many people who clearly adore him.

My job for the day was essentially to make sure Henry could enjoy being part of everything without his excitement becoming quite as involved as he might have liked. We had walks, plenty of guest introductions, photo opportunities, a lot of enthusiasm, and then finished the day with dinner alongside Benji and Betty, who I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time and were both absolute sweethearts.

It was my first experience of wedding dog chaperoning and I couldn’t have asked for a nicer couple, dog or wedding to start with. I had such a lovely day and feel incredibly grateful that you trusted me with someone so important to you on one of the biggest days of your lives.

Congratulations again, Laura and Charlie. Thank you for letting Henry, and me, share a little part of your special day.

Tomorrow, something pretty incredible is happening….☀️🌙

We’re getting our biggest solar eclipse in nearly 30 years, with around 93% of the Sun covered here in Bristol at its peak.

For us, that’s a proper “you don’t see this every day” moment.

For your dog? There’s a very real chance they could not care less 😂

Dogs obviously don’t know why the daylight has suddenly dimmed, but they may notice that it’s changing much faster than usual and at a time when it would normally still be light.

Some may become a little more alert, confused or unsettled. Others will probably carry on with far more important things, like investigating a smell that apparently wasn’t there five minutes ago, trying to get hold of something they shouldn’t while your attention is diverted, or resuming the belly up position because how dare you be looking at the sky instead of giving tummy rubs.

If your dog does seem a bit unsettled, keep things normal. Stay calm, offer reassurance if they want it, or distract them with something familiar like a toy.

I hope you all get a chance to enjoy just how incredible our universe can be tomorrow 🩷

🎈 If Bright Pups had a hot air balloon… 🎈

Over the weekend, we saw the hot air balloons come alive again at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta.

The Fiesta has been part of Bristol since 1979, and is one of our biggest traditions. Thousands of people head over each year and naturally, some people bring their dogs along too.

But it’s worth asking: would your dog actually enjoy being there?

Crowds, music, announcements, other dogs, unfamiliar smells and the sudden noise of balloon burners can be an awful lot for a dog to process.

Think about walking through a packed crowd too. Most of us are looking ahead, not down. For a dog at ankle height, that’s a lot of feet, legs and people moving around them.

Some dogs will cope perfectly well, others may be showing signs of distress. I know an event like that would not be Lotties idea of a fun day out!

And coping isn’t necessarily the same as enjoying it and we need to recognise the signs that they’re trying to communicate to us.

Warm weather, hours outside and all that stimulation can add to the pressure too.

We all love including our dogs in the things we enjoy, but sometimes the best decision is asking whether we want them there more than they actually want to be there.

With that said, I hope you all enjoyed watching the balloons and had a lovely weekend!

🙌🏼 Squad Goals 🙌🏼

We love our little girl gang. Here’s why…

One of the biggest benefits of small group walks is socialisation. Dogs don’t have to spend the whole walk playing together to benefit. Simply being around calm, well-mannered dogs helps them learn how to communicate, read body language and become more confident in different environments.

Tiggy is our youngest at 18 months old. When she first joined us, she was a little unsure of herself. Since joining our group, she’s become so much more confident just by watching and learning from the others. It’s been lovely to see.

Bella is the sweetest girl. She loves a good sniff, enjoys a run around and is always up for a little play. She’s the perfect mix of playful and gentle.

Alba. Our resident diva. She likes to do things in her own time, enjoys sniffing every blade of grass and has a habit of deciding the best route is the opposite direction to everyone else. But she’s calm, independent and always happy to be part of the group.

Winnie is currently on her holibobs, but she’ll be back soon. She loves everyone and everything… apart from being told she can’t retrieve the ball she’s spotted three fields away.

They’re all completely different, but that’s exactly why they work so well together 🩷

Hi, I’m Mona, the owner of Bright Pups. That’s me in the top right-hand corner with my Cockapoo, Lottie, who inspired me to start Bright Pups.

❣️ Happy National Yorkie Day ❣️

This is Alba.

Officially, I walk her.

Unofficially, I follow her around while she conducts a series of very important inspections.

Every decision has already been made before she gets out of the car. My opinions are noted and immediately ignored.

The route? Alba decides.
The pace? Alba decides.
When the walk resumes? Also Alba.

I’ve probably carried her more times than she’s actually walked, which tells you everything you need to know about who’s in charge and who’s accepted that carrying her is apparently part of the job description.

She’s tiny, confident, very dramatic and completely convinced the world revolves around her.

To be fair… she’s probably right.

☀️ That’s a wrap, July ☀️

I’m fairly sure we skipped straight from spring to living on the surface of the sun.

July meant setting alarms far earlier than expected, and swapping some afternoon walks for home visits whenever it was just too hot..

This month we also said “see you soon” to Winnie, Pancho and Bruce, who are off enjoying the summer with their families. I hope you’re having the best time. We’ll be ready when you’re back.

We also welcomed Bowie, Maud and Mungo to the Bright Pups gang. It’s been lush getting to know you all, and I can’t wait for more walkies.

And finally, thank you. This month has thrown a few extra challenges my way, alongside the heat I’ve had a sprained ankle and someone wanting to play bumper cars and speeding off.
Thank you for being so understanding when plans have needed to change, for being patient when I’ve had to juggle things around, and for always trusting me with your dogs. It genuinely means a lot and never goes unnoticed 🩷

Right… let’s see what August has in store. Hopefully it’s slightly less lava and more happy memories being made

There was a time when I found it quite hard watching Lottie on walks.

She absolutely loves the thought of going out, but once we were there, her confidence would often disappear. Ever since she developed a fear of sudden bangs, she’d spend much of the walk looking over her shoulder, staying close to me and never really switching off.

As a dog walker, I spend my days walking happy, confident dogs who are quite content to wander around sniffing and exploring. It was sad knowing my own dog wasn’t getting that same enjoyment.

Then I realised I was looking at it the wrong way.

Instead of trying to make Lottie enjoy the kind of walk I thought she should, I started building our walks around what she enjoys.

The second a ball comes out, everything changes. Her tail starts wagging, she’s focused, she’s confident and she’s having fun. We already do plenty of enrichment and training at home for both her working Cocker Spaniel brain and her Poodle brain, but it never occurred to me to bring that into our walks too.

Now our walks are less about covering miles and more about quality. We play fetch, use benches, logs and little obstacles as our own agility course, practise little bits of training and let her do what she was bred to do.

She’s still aware of the world around her and sudden bangs can still worry her, but she’s spending far more of her walk enjoying herself instead of waiting for something to happen.

Sometimes adapting the walk doesn’t mean giving your dog less. It means giving them exactly what they need.

Every dog is different, and sometimes the best walks aren’t the ones that look the most impressive. They’re the ones that leave your dog happier than when they set off.
