We haven't been on our usual long walks every day over the last few weeks because sometimes it's just been far too hot, but that's okay ☀️

We've been making the most of early morning and late evening walks, done a bit of mantrailing on the cooler evenings, played scent games, visited friends and family, spent lots of time sat in the garden and just enjoyed being together.

I think it's easy to feel guilty when you can't do your normal routine, but sometimes slowing things down is exactly what they need 🐾❤️

This week’s heat is no joke 🥵 so walks need to take a back seat when the sun’s at its peak.

But that doesn’t mean your dog has to be bored, you just need to be a bit more creative with how you keep them entertained at home 🐾

Freddie ❤️

The first dog me and my husband got together, and what a dog he was.

He originally came from Spain and ended up at a rescue over here after being starved nearly to death. When we brought him home those first few months were HARD. Chaos, stress, tears and many moments of wondering what on earth we’d taken on 🤣

But underneath all of that he was just a dog trying to figure out how to feel safe and loved.

And once he did, he turned into the most amazing boy. So funny, sweet, affectionate and unbelievably goofy. He had us laughing every single day and became such a huge part of our lives.

Due to his health problems, we only got just over 4 years with him which will never feel like enough, but I’d do it all again for him in a heartbeat.

He taught me so much about dogs and I’ll forever be grateful that we found each other ❤️

Ruby ❤️ the dog that started it all.

People assume I have always had dogs, but that actually isn't the case. I’d always absolutely loved them growing up, but with my parents working full time and then me doing the same as an adult, I thought I might never have a dog of my own.

Then I met my husband… and with him came Ruby 🥰

She was the first dog I truly got to love every single day. The first one I learnt from, worried about, laughed at, cuddled on the sofa with and completely obsessed over 🤣 She’s the reason my fascination with dogs grew into so much more, and probably the reason I ended up on the path I’m on now.

Funny how one dog can completely change your life 🐾

Spent yesterday evening doing some Mantrailing with 🐾 it's become one of my favourite activities to do with Stevie 🥰

Not only is it amazing mental enrichment, but it gives dogs a great chance to use their natural instincts, build confidence, problem solve and just generally enjoy themselves. Stevie's confidence has grown so much since we started trailing and I love watching her work things out.

It’s suitable for so many different dogs too - nervous dogs, reactive dogs, older dogs. They all get to work at their own pace with no pressure.

Thank you Amy for such a supportive and fun session as always. We absolutely love coming along 😁

One of the biggest puppy socialisation myths is that puppies need to interact with every dog they see ❌

A lot of owners are encouraged to do this with the best intentions, but too many interactions can sometimes create problems later on.

Some dogs become reactive because they learn to expect access to every dog they see, leading to frustration when they can’t say hello. Others become reactive because they’ve had too many unwanted interactions and start to feel overwhelmed, uncomfortable or fed up with dogs constantly being in their space.

Quality of interactions matters far more than quantity. A few calm, positive experiences with suitable dogs is far more valuable than meeting every dog on every walk.

Choose interactions carefully. Not every dog is a good match for your puppy, and not every walk needs an on lead greeting or play session.

Good socialisation isn’t about meeting every dog, it’s about learning to feel calm, neutral and able to ignore them 🐾

One of the biggest mistakes people make with recall is trying to “prove” it too early.

Calling your dog away from distractions before the cue has real value usually just teaches them they can ignore it.
Instead, start EASY. Your dog can literally be standing next to you.

The goal at first isn’t distance, it’s conditioning. You want the recall word to become exciting and automatic before you ever rely on it in difficult situations.

This is why good recall can look almost instant. The dog isn’t stopping to debate whether to come back, the cue itself already triggers the response 🧠🐾
