Another of the litters born last weekend. Fifteen Irish setter puppies born naturally, quite remarkable in itself, even more so when you learn the “dad” was 11 years old! Progesterone tests ensured timing was ideal, semen checks ensured there was still a good chance, and then being Irish setters the result was this huge litter☺️

Lots of litters have arrived this weekend, with a little help at conception from Millhouse.
These two litters are the result of frozen semen TCIs

Three much anticipated litters born this week, and all arrived as predicted 63days after ovulating. Knowing exactly when ovulation occurred was important for the frozen semen TCI (carried out by our colleagues at Prime Vets), for the chilled semen TCI (carried out in France) and for the fresh semen insemination following a journey to Devon. Congratulations to all three

Not difficult to guess that these are curlies - born recently in America from frozen semen collected here in Wales (two of a litter or four curly coated retrievers - congratulations to all)

The World sheepdog trials were held this weekend, in Scotland. The top dogs and handlers from 34 countries took part, making up almost 400 competitors. And all three winners were from Wales!
Winning the trial was David Howells and Wyverne Pip, winning the young handler competition was Jack Howells (David’s son) with Cydros Boss and winning the Brace competition was Kevin Evans with Valley View Dan and Kemi Ids. Massive congratulations to all. And also to Angie Driscoll and Carlos coming third in the main trial.
(And the previous week Dewi Jenkins and Clwyd Bob became Supreme Champions for the second consecutive year)
Such talent in our small country🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

For those of you who take your dogs (or cats or ferrets) to Europe, there has been a change to the AHC which now requires the animal to be examined (instead of just having the microchip checked). Vets must now ensure the animal shows no signs of disease and is fit for the journey.
Unfortunately this means the cost of an AHC will increase from £100+vat to £125+vat (NB only available to our breeder clients who have had rabies vacc carried out here)

And we shouldn’t forget these 8 Dutch shepherd pups who arrived last month, they were also the result of a frozen semen TCI. The stud owner had the forethought to freeze some semen as “dad” was off to join the police

A very contented mother and her 8 malinois pups, they arrived overnight following a frozen semen TCI (semen imported from Austria)🇦🇹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

This is written by ophthalmologists who have been dealing with the increased number of severe, bilateral “dry eye” cases possibly related to feeding Years dog food. The exact cause is still not clear but some dogs are improving since being on a different diet which certainly gives hope to those affected dogs. A tear test is a very simple procedure and early treatment is the key to keep the corneal surface moist

This is a great article from Improve Veterinary Education UK about how we can best manage cases of dry eye that potentially could be linked to the recent issues with Years dog food

Also the British Association of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (BrAVO) are collecting potential cases for study. If you think you have seen any, please report them via this form;
