Teaching your dog “middle” (where they stand between your legs) isn’t just super cute—it’s useful too!

Not only does it boost your dog’s confidence and help with focus in busy places, but it’s also a great way to keep them close on walks.

Plus, it’s a helpful position for fetch—your dog can line up straight and avoid those quick body twists that sometimes happen when chasing after the ball.

Gentle desensitisation is the key!

Start at a distance where your dog can stay calm and focus on you.
Reward relaxed behaviour and let your dog watch and sniff without any pressure.

Gradually get closer over several sessions, always at your dog’s pace.

Remember: patience, positive reinforcement, and consistency will help your dog feel confident and in control around all kinds of animals.

Play is one of the most powerful tools in positive reinforcement training!
When we incorporate play into training sessions, we’re doing so much more than teaching commands. We’re building trust, strengthening our bond, and creating a dog who’s genuinely excited to learn.
Here’s why play matters:
Motivation - For many dogs, play can be even more rewarding than treats. A quick game of tug or fetch can be the ultimate “yes, you got it right!”
Engagement - Playful training keeps your dog’s attention focused on you, making learning feel fun and easy, instead of feeling like work.
Confidence - Play can help nervous or anxious dogs relax and associate training with positive emotions, building their confidence over time when introduced appropriately.
Communication - Through play, we can learn to read our dogs better and vice versa
A dog who loves playing with you is showing they trust you. And building that trust is the foundation of everything we do in positive reinforcement training.
(Of course, every dog is unique - some prefer treats or other rewards, and that’s great too! The key is finding what motivates YOUR dog.)

What Positive Reinforcement?

You’ve probably heard this term thrown around a lot in dog training - but what does it actually mean?
Simply put: Positive reinforcement means adding something your dog loves when they do a behaviour you like. This makes that behaviour more likely to happen again!
Here’s how it works: Your dog sits when asked ✅ You give them a treat (or praise, or a toy!) ✅ Your dog learns that sitting = good things ✅ They’re more likely to sit next time
The “positive” part? We’re ADDING something good (not taking anything away)
The “reinforcement” part? We’re making the behaviour stronger and more likely to happen again
What can you use as rewards? 🦴 Treats 💚 Praise and affection 🎾 Toys and play 🌳 Environmental rewards (like sniffing a tree!) 🚶 Access to what they want (going through the door, greeting a friend)
Why does this work so well? Dogs repeat behaviour’s that work for them! When good behaviour earns great things, your dog WANTS to cooperate. It builds trust, strengthens your bond, and makes training enjoyable for both of you.
The best part? You’re teaching your dog what TO do, not just what NOT to do. This creates a confident, happy dog who loves learning with you!
