At Muttley Poppins, we operate Extreme Weather protocols ⚠️ 🔥 As our clients are aware from regular direct updates, in high heat, this can mean walks are either cancelled, curtailed or turn to drop-in visits, with plenty of water and shade 🌳 With owners working, dogs still need a visit to relieve themselves outdoors, have a fuss or release energy ~ so this continues, but with a lot of common sense and comfort modification 🩵 Stay cool pups! 💦 🧊 🐶 muttleypoppins.co.uk

Bank holiday sunshine is on the way 🌞

While we might be reaching for the ice creams and garden chairs, our dogs can struggle much more in the heat, especially during walks.

That’s why we’re giving a big shoutout to ‘Good to Walk’, a brilliant free tool that helps dog owners quickly check whether it’s safe to head out for walkies in the current weather. It’s there to make those hot weather decisions a little easier and help reduce the risk of dogs overheating or developing heatstroke.

Wishing you and your four-legged sun worshippers a fabulous bank holiday weekend. Keep cool, stay shady and if in doubt… paddling pool time 💦🕶️

This beautiful girl, my friend’s dog, has been with me since I started dog walking 8 years ago. She is one of the most characterful dogs I know. In my current canine behaviour study, I am learning about misunderstanding of body language in brachycephalic (short muzzled) breeds. Well… as you can see, they can certainly express themselves: a wide, open-mouthed, relaxed and joyous expression, avidly pricked ears, bright soft eyes and an assured, bouncy gait make it pretty clear to read… the body language of happiness! Got to love her 💓 🐕 muttleypoppins.co.uk

As many of my clients will know, sadly yesterday we lost the leader of our pack, Waffle 🐾 He was a wonderful dog. The kind you get in stories. I loved him so very much and so did the family. He had a full, happy life and a peaceful end. He loved nothing more than being with his friends (well, that and eating! 😋) Just to thank all clients for their kindness & flexibility in the circumstances 🐶 💓

Like many settings, public dog parks (enclosures) have their place & can be great! BUT it may be worth looking at it from a different angle, IF it doesn’t suit your dog/s! Also remember that that seemingly secure enclosure can feel overwhelming if a dog has had enough play/interaction and wants out, yet is reliant on their person for an escape. Interesting perspective x ❤️🐾

Looks fun, until it isn't.
Dog parks aren’t something I generally encourage.
They add a lot of pressure, reduce choice, and rely heavily on humans noticing early changes and that last part is the concern.

There’s a lot happening inside a dog park.
Social dynamics at their best, and sometimes at their worst. Interactions that started well can fall apart, often while people are still scrolling on their phones.

I know life is busy. It’s getting busier for everyone.
But dog parks aren’t a place to disengage. We need to lift our eyes, watch the dogs, and notice what’s actually happening.

We also need to recognise when it’s time to leave.

• Have the dynamics shifted after new dogs entered?
• Is another dog insisting on interaction when yours is clearly saying they want out?
• Has your dog’s arousal increased to a point where they have stopped responding?
• Is someone dismissing escalating behaviour with “it’s okay, he’s friendly”?

That’s your cue to go.

It doesn’t matter if they’ve only had 23 minutes instead of 30.
It doesn’t matter if their favourite playmate just arrived.

Knowing when to leave is crucial.
