Here are some simple, easy-to-follow dog training tips you can use straight away:
1. Keep it short and fun
Dogs learn best in quick sessions (5–10 minutes). Stop before they get bored.
2. Be consistent
Use the same words and rules every time. If “off” means get down, everyone in the house should use it.
3. Reward good behaviour
Praise, treats, or a toy—reward immediately so they link it to what they did right.
4. Timing is everything
Reward or correct within a second or two. Otherwise, they won’t connect it.
5. Start with basics
Focus on simple commands like sit, stay, come, and down before anything advanced.
6. Train in a quiet space first
Less distractions = better focus. Build up to busier environments later.
7. Don’t punish—redirect
If they’re doing something wrong, guide them to the right behaviour instead.
8. Practice daily
Little and often works best. Even 5 minutes a day makes a big difference.
9. Be patient
Every dog learns at their own pace—stick with it.
10. End on a positive
Finish sessions with something they did well so they enjoy training next time.
