The Mirkwood Rest Home for Retired Sheep

The Mirkwood Rest Home for Retired Sheep Vegan sanctuary where we take in aged sheep and allow them to live out their lives in peace and comfort.

There is far too much animal cruelty in the world, we offer an oasis of kindness. 🐑

Our two new Wonderland girls have an illustrious background and a future of love and rich tea biscuits. 🐑❤️

These two gorgeous munchkins are Carol and Edgar and they hope that you might bear with them as they ask, once again, for your help. 🐑❤️
Sanctuaries are expensive to run, there are an awful lot of outgoings with the only incomings being the Sheepy Shuffle and your very kind interim donations. ❤️
The Sheepy Shuffle usually brings in enough money to see us through from September to May time when your kind donations help us to get the boys and girls sheared. Up until now, I have been covering the period from May to September by withdrawing from my pension pot. Alas it is not a bottomless pension pot and is unfortunately now empty. 😢
The Sheepy Shuffle WILL happen again this year but I am a bit late getting the medal designed and signed off but we are almost there so worry not. 🐑
Next to losing our wonderful sheep, asking for money is my least favourite thing but If anyone can spare the odd pound or two to get us through from now until September it would be greatly appreciated. Any money donated will go directly to care of the sheep, feed, medicine, hay and animal care products. What I consider to be fripperies such as carrots, biscuits, bananas and the like are paid for by myself and are the reason I'm still working well past retirement. 🐑❤️
I'll put the words smallest violin away now but if any of you can spare anything, the donation links are below. Thank you so much from me and the 49 boys and girls currently resident at Mirkwood. 🙏🏻🐑

*** RIP Jemima 15.03.2017 to 08.06.2026 ***
Following the happy arrivals of yesterday it would appear that the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. 💔 After twelve sad losses already this year I was rather hoping that we were set fair for a happier spell, none of the boys or girls were obvious candidates for the pearly gates but once again I have been proved wrong. Jemima seemed right as rain this morning, eating her breakfast with gusto along with everyone else but when I went to feed them this evening I found she had slipped away from us, though she did look very peaceful. 💔🐑🌈
She came to live with us along with Buttons, Merrylegs and Miffy at the end of October 2021 when her carer had to move from a rural setting near Reading to somewhere more urban in Oxford. She has never been and ounce of trouble, another one of those sheep that flew under the radar but she was such a pretty little girl that I made a regular point of seeking her out for a cuddle. 🐑❤️ I'm going to miss this gorgeous little girl more than I can say, safe journey Mima until we meet again. 🐑❤️
I know keeping old sheep is what I do but is it too much to ask for a decent period of stability... please. 🙏🐑

Running a sanctuary has its ups and downs but one of the nicer things is when we get to welcome new members to the flock, today was one of those days. ❤️🐑
So say hello to YoYo on the left and Zena on the right who the most wonderful Debbie and David from the Wonderland flock near Sheffield ( Wortley Bank Baa ) have brought to us to enjoy their retirement. YoYo is eight years old and has had ten lambs over that time and Zena is seven years old and has had nine lambs in that time, both of them have enjoyed much success at agricultural shows and I think it's safe to say that they've earned their retirement. ❤️🐑
This now means that we have a YumYum and a YoYo and a Xena with and X and a Zena with a Z so not confusing at all! 😂 Welcome to Mirkwood you beautiful girls... you will be loved to within an inch of your life! 😂🐑❤️

Time to say hello to a couple of the girls for a change. 🐑❤️ Buttons and Porridge are rather fond of bananas but so are a lot of the boys and girls here at Mirkwood. 🐑❤️

This gorgeous and incredibly solid young man is Noel. 🐑 He and his mate Nigel don't actually belong to me, they came here four years ago to be sheared and somehow never went back! 😂 Their Mum is still looking for somewhere to keep them but until such time I will continue to love them to the ends of the earth. 🐑❤️

Our great big beautiful baby Basil decided he wanted a cuddle tonight... Jack wasn't far away! ❤️🐑

The boys and girls here absolutely love their apples and so we are totally indebted to Gemma and Tesco in Boston for once again letting us have their excess apples, I can't tell you how happy this makes them and me, I swear you can see the smiles on their faces when you walk in the field with the buckets of apples! 🍎🍏🐑

It's hard work this sheeping lark, we have to go for a lay down after we've had our tea. 🐑❤️
