Introducing Goober 💚

Goobs is my new foster dog (for now👀) who has been staying with the amazing Gill | Everyday Dog Solutions for the last month. Gill has done some incredible work with him, which I am very grateful for!!

You'll likely see Goober on our Neutral and Social walks, and attending some training sessions where he may be needed.

He is such a lovely boy, and I cannot wait to continue working with him under Gill's help and advice 🥰

This is your reminder to hold your dogs like you’re doing horse feet when trimming their nails! 💅🏼

I always like to lift the paw up backwards to see from the underside - this is super handy for those pesky black nails, and as clear nails can be very deceiving from the top 👀

I find most dogs prefer this position for nail trims too as it’s not done in easy view of them, and it’s a more natural way to bend the leg 😉

Let’s decode the conversation happening between these two dogs!

First off, what do I see purely just from observing their body language?

Gracie - Beige dog
- Ears held forward
- Tail held high
- Raised hackles
- Forward weighted body posture
- Head-on stare / intense eye contact
Gracie when Bonnie arrives on the scene
- Lip lick
- Raise of one front paw
- Very quick, slight lip curl / baring of teeth
- High head position
- Puffed chest
- Shoulder to shoulder stance
- Avoids eye contact initially

Bonnie - Black dog
- Comes in very hot / fast
- Ears held forward initially and then pin back once dogs are shoulder - shoulder
- Very high & stiff tail
- High head
- Puffed chest
- Straight in for head on / shoulder - shoulder stance
- Hackles raised
- Growls
- Curves away but straight back to making eye contact

Knowing these dogs and their relationships well - what does this tell me?

Gracie is generally speaking very good with other dogs, but was startled by Teddy (white dog) coming in, so she has some threatening body language to greet him, with the stare, high tail, hackles etc.

Bonnie loves Teddy and went in with quite a lot of intent to displace / calm Gracie down (a bit too much, absolutely, but she’s learning!) as she saw her as a threat to Teddy in this situation. There may have also been an element of competition in there for Bonnie as Teddy is male, and Gracie is female.

Gracie stands her ground as Bonnie comes in, with that high posture and adding in a slight lip curl, but also offers some appeasement signs with the paw raise and avoidance of eye contact.
Bonnie growls as she sees the lip curl, but then decides to curve away in the opposite direction, diffusing the tension, whilst still keeping an eye on Gracie!

You can see they both relax very quickly as they hear me in the garden, their tails drop and loosen up, their ears soften, their bodies lower slightly.
They were absolutely fine with one another, as usual, after this conversation they had.

Making sure we don’t only say certain markers or cues ONLY when triggers are around is really important…

Practising them randomly and often helps to
✅ Strengthen the marker (or cue)
✅ Bring quick, automatic engagement
✅ Make sure it doesn’t turn into a ‘poisoned cue’ (I’ll be doing a post on poisoned cues on soon) 👀

I only started doing this with Vesper very recently, but you can see it’s already getting a pretty good response from her… this was the first time we were able to pass this little dog at the fence without a single bit of barking & lunging 🤩

Today was another hot one - so rather than a walk, I brought best boy to my garden for a change of scenery and some new bits to explore🌳
I’m lucky enough to have a decent sized, and well shaded garden with a paddling pool, so this is a perfect alternative on days like this🥵

He loved hopping into the stinky pond (right next to the lovely clean paddling pool, that he was less willing to go in, of course)💦 so I had to give him a rinse off at the end, and of course he had to have an emotional support bite pillow for wash time🥹

This is Beau! He’s a very loving and friendly goofball, but has started struggling with his listening skills out and about as he’s gone into adolescence. Although he’s a lab, he lacks food and toy motivation 😱 so he’ll be putting me to the test!

This is what we’ll be working on to help him get back on track:
🐾 Stopping so much marking (this seems to be his main focus on walks)
🐾 Building food & toy drive
🐾 Creating a really solid, positive marker
🐾 Making other dogs a bit “boring”

Follow along to see how we go! 🐶
