Last week, Becca, together with Melissa from Kenwyn Vets, attended BCVA Congress in Telford.
They presented two posters which they and Maia, also from Kenwyn Vets, have produced, with assistance from Tracy and with sponsorship and support from Zoetis.
The posters, titled 'Practical outcomes of a CIDR sync program in dairy heifers' and 'Challenges faced by farmer and veterinary surgeon when CIDR syncing heifers,' are based on work done over the last 12 months on Kernow and Kenwyn farms. It involved CIDR syncing heifers and assessing if conception rates were comparable, and examining why conception rates may be different from expected.
It was found that the use of a CIDR sync protocol in older heifers can still be an effective approach to improving reproductive management, but is not a substitute for good breeding decision-making. By using a CIDR sync protocol and fixed-time AI, labour is reduced—there is no need for oestrus detection, and breeding can be organised around a specific date.
Thank you to all the farms who participated.
