🕊️ Preparing for Next Season: Blackpool’s Baby Gulls Need Your Help! 🐣
While nesting season is behind us for now, the work to save next year’s birds has already begun. Every summer, our dedicated network of foster carers is pushed to the absolute limit caring for vulnerable fledglings and injured chicks fallen from local rooftops.
To give next year’s rescues the best possible chance of survival, we urgently need to upgrade our setups over the winter. Our foster carers desperately need dedicated, predator-safe rehabilitation aviaries and specialist intensive care incubators before the busy period begins.
Because this equipment requires specialist commercial ordering and custom construction, monetary donations are crucial right now to make this happen.
What your donations will fund:
🏗️ Custom Pre-Release Aviaries – giving young gulls the safe flight space they need in our foster gardens to build muscle and waterproof their feathers before returning to the skies.
🌡️ Specialist Intensive Care Incubators – regulated warmth and humidity units vital for saving the tiniest, shock-stricken rooftop casualties.
Follow the journey: We want to show you exactly how your generosity is helping! As the funds come in and the builds begin, we will be posting regular images and updates of our progress, so you can see the new equipment and aviaries coming together ready for next spring.

Here are some of the 60+ gull chicks we've helped this season, over half of which have now been released to embark on their new adventures.
Mastering the art of flight takes approx 8 weeks and only then can any chicks in our care be safely released, having gained the ability to escape from potential predators on the ground.
Thanks to generous donations from some of our fellow gull-lovers the chicks in our care have thrived. We have received a wide selection of items from our Amazon Wishlist and other donations, all very much appreciated, keeping our charges bellies full, cages/sleeping areas clean and 'pools' to ensure they can preen to waterproof their new feathers.

❤️We are hugely grateful for the support❤️.

With a month of the season still to go we are running low on FOOD for our chicks...
If anyone would like to send them a gift, they would hugely appreciate any of the different cat foods on our Amazon Wishlist. These all provide the protein needed to strengthen wing and leg muscles ready for release, giving them the best start in life.

It’s that time of year again when our clumsy little neighbours start taking their very first flights! 🐣

Please bear with us and show a little extra patience whilst baby seagulls learn the ropes. Here are a few ways we can all help protect them over the coming weeks:

🚗 Watch the lights: Please take an extra second to check the road when pulling away from traffic lights, as fledglings often wander onto tarmac.

🚶 Guide them to safety: If you spot a baby gull in a vulnerable place, you can easily guide them onto a safe pavement away from the road by simply walking slowly towards them with your arms outstretched (our team member even managed this recently in their Sunday scrubs—it really is very straightforward!).

🍟 Feed them away from traffic: Thank you to everyone who puts out food for them, but please make sure it’s placed well away from roads so they don't get distracted and end up in harm's way.

🗣️ Spread the word: Have a chat with your work colleagues, friends, family, and neighbours about our wonderful protected birds. You might be surprised by how many people don’t realise that our seabirds are in decline, and even more surprised by how many are more than willing to lend a helping hand. ❤️

🐣 'Tis the season for baby birds! 🐣

We get a lot of enquiries this time of year from people wondering how to help a gull chick that has fallen from a roof. If you’ve spotted a little feathered neighbour in your garden who needs a lift, here is a handy guide on how to handle it safely—for both you and the bird.

☂️ The "Dive-Bomb" Defense
Protective bird parents (especially gulls) can get incredibly defensive of their young. If you need to intervene:

• Deploy an umbrella: Open a brolly to shield yourself from swooping parents while you collect the bird.

• Tag-team it: Ask a neighbour for help! They can hold the umbrella and keep watch while you safely navigate and move the chick.

• Wear gloves: A simple pair of gardening gloves protects your hands and keeps things hygienic.

Some of the messages we receive contain questions like “can someone help?”, “can someone come out to us?”, sadly we cannot because we are full, but thankfully you are the “someone” who can! It’s simple to ask around your local streets, hardware stores, neighbours and friendly roofers/window cleaners.

Thank you for everything you are all doing to support our local wildlife.

We are sorry to announce that our guardians are currently full.

To ensure we can focus entirely on the welfare of the birds already in our care, we have made the difficult decision to remove the 'Message' button from our page for the time being.

We want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who has played their part in helping us so far—whether you have transported a bird to the vets based on our advice or assisted in getting a rescue to a safe, suitable sanctuary. Your support has been invaluable to us and to our local wildlife.

Our team of guardians is small, and despite our previous appeals for more help, we remain at our limit. We need to pause new intake inquiries to ensure we can maintain the high standards of care our rescues deserve.

Please rest assured that we are not going anywhere. We will continue to post daily advice right here on our page so that you can continue to help the wildlife in your gardens and neighbourhoods.

We will reactivate the 'Message' button as soon as we have the space and resources to welcome more rescues.

Thank you all for your continued understanding and for your passion for our wildlife.

Imagine.....

In May, spending a long time building your nest for your babies, then sitting on your eggs continuously for 3 whole weeks patiently waiting for your babies to hatch, hatching your beautiful fluffy babies, only for one to accidentally fall off the roof.

Instead of being able to carry on looking after your lovely baby in the garden for a few weeks, a human then takes it away without monitoring for the 4 to 6 times a day you'll come back with food for your baby, or placing your baby somewhere up high so you can continue to care for them safely, and you have no idea where your little baby has gone.

Utterly heartbreaking 💔

All it would have taken is a little effort for the person to find ladders and return them to the roof.

Well done to all of the people who have made effort and returned uninjured baby gulls safely to higher spaces so their mum's can continue to care for them with Brambles' guidance. You have done the kindest thing 💗

Do's

✔️ Monitor for the parent coming back 4 to 6 times that day to feed
✔️ Place up high on a shed, garage or extension if you can't get them back to the roof
✔️ Feed them wet cat or dog food or fish to speed up their fledging and stop swooping from mum
✔️ If in danger move to the garden of the property where the nest (or mum) is
✔️If fully feathered and on the pavement (fledged) move to the garden of the property where the nest (or mum) is
✔️Offer a little shelter if placing up high or in a garden, like a plastic box on its side or a large cat carrier

Don't
❌️ Move an uninjured baby gull without seeking advice from a wildlife rescue unless it is in mortal danger
❌️ Contact ourselves or Brambles Wildlife Rescue unless the baby can be proven by video to be in immediate danger or orphaned, ill or injured. We cannot help with other enquiries, uninjured babies need to be left with parents in gardens or placed back on roofs, garages, sheds or extensions so the parents can continue to care for them.

Each baby costs more than a cat to feed so rescue spaces are extremely limited - they go through 4 pouches of food each a day. If you take a baby home without first seeking advice, and there are no rescue spaces left, be prepared to rear the baby for the full 8 weeks at your home.

Thousands of baby gulls come down from the rooftops from June to August. The vast majority DO NOT need to be removed from their mum's care, and some sadly do go downhill quickly when removed from their natural environment resulting in unnecessary deaths that can be avoided by making effort to keep baby with mum.

If you want to help baby, make sure you are helping mum too 💗

It's always very sad when these little ones are separated from their parents and we always endeavour to keep families together if at all possible - gulls are terrific parents, dive-bombing potential predators (including humans!) if a baby falls from the roof. They do continue feeding their chicks if at all able, hence our in initial requests for you to simply monitor the situation, and find someone with a ladder to help you get the chick off the ground.
Occasionally gulls will sacrifice one chick to save the others in the nest - this is when the babies need our help if they are to survive in this cruel world...
Heartfelt thanks to all of you who have followed the advice given over the past 2-3 weeks.
We can ALL do our bit whether that be to report, monitor, provide food/water, transport, or simply donate. Every single £ is massively appreciated and is spent on the chicks' care.

This 2-3 week old chick found herself trapped in a workshop/garage with lots of machinery. She sustained several cuts and abrasions to her head during her attempts to escape. After being taken to a vet where her wounds were cleaned and she was given the name Daisy, she was collected by guardian Deb to continue her care - twice daily cleaning and treatment with manuka honey to aid healing.
Daisy is now housed with a number of other chicks, learning all things ‘gull’. 😊🥰

📌If you enjoy reading about the chicks we care for and would like to send them some gifts, you can choose items off our Amazon wish listamazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/1ojikbchv9iuc?ref_=wl_share

📌Alternatively, a financial donation would allow us to buy much needed supplies for the babies - you can do that at our Paypal, or message us if you would like to make a physical donation.

Teeny-tiny Annie was handed in to the fabulous team at The Veterinary Health Centre who contacted Brambles to see if we could help.
She was snapped up by guardian, Deb, who had an Annie-sized space - are you surprised?!
She initially needed help feeding using forceps but very quickly learnt from her ‘roomie’, Sabrina, it was quicker to simply delve into the food bowl herself!
Isn’t she adorable 🥰
