For pet owners who use flea and tick spot-on treatments, application and disposal are really important.

The Be Spot-On Aware campaign run by the VMD is encouraging pet owners to follow three simple steps: Plan, Apply, Protect.

1. Apply the treatment to clean, dry skin rather than fur so it works as it should.

2. Keep your pet out of water for at least four days afterwards, and limit swimming and bathing in the weeks that follow.

3. Bin used pipettes rather than rinsing them.

These small steps give the treatment the best chance of protecting your pet, whilst reducing the risk of active ingredients entering UK waterways.

Autumn walks are in full swing, but for the dogs who like to chew and scavenge, there are some seasonal hazards to be wary of.

Conkers and acorns can cause blockages if swallowed, and acorns contain tannins which are toxic to dogs in large quantities. If conkers haven't shed their shells yet, the spiky casing can also catch on paws and potentially cause injury.

Keep an eye on curious noses when you are taking them on walks, and if you suspect your dog has eaten either, contact your vet for advice.

Another year supporting working dogs at Llanwddyn Sheepdog Trials

This year's turnout was impressive, with more dogs entering than usual. There were a number of regular handlers, along with competitors preparing for this year's World Sheepdog Trials in Scotland.

We provided a bundle of Johnson's products for the prize winners, as well as samples for attendees, which Cyril Roberts kindly put together in bags for this year's top competitors.

Well done to everyone who took part, particularly the winners across the Open and Novice classes.

Tick season isn’t over. It’s a popular belief that ticks disappear once summer ends, but that's not the case – they remain active well into autumn, particularly during mild, damp weather.

Woodland walks, long grass, and even local parks can all harbour ticks at this time of year, affecting not just pets, but their owners too. Ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease to animals and humans, so it’s important to regularly check yourself and your pets after walks.
