Are you travelling with your pet this summer? A pack of Travel-Eze can help make longer journeys a lot more relaxing for your pet and other passengers.

Signs of travel anxiety include excessive drooling, panting, whining, or being sick during the journey, and it’s not uncommon for pets to experience these feelings when travelling.

Give your pet a tablet before you set off in the car or train for a calm and comfortable journey. This product can be purchased from your local pet shop, as seen here: https://johnsons-vet.com/find-a-johnsons-retailer-near-you/

Behind every independent pet shop is a team who care about far more than selling products.

Bob, Diane and the team at Coalville Pet Supplies have had an extraordinary impact on their community, their customers and the animals in their care for years. Most of it behind the scenes, most of it in their own time. That is exactly why we recognised them.

Coalville Pet Supplies has become the first ever recipient of the National Pet Shop Day Recognition Award, presented in honour of their contribution to the pet care industry, their dedication to animal conservation through Midland Parrots, and their unwavering support for the Leicestershire community.

This is what independent pet retail looks like at its very best, and we want to thank everyone at Coalville for all their hard work across the years. Congratulations to you.

For International Assistance Dog Week, we want to shine a spotlight on our headline charity sponsor, Hounds for Heroes.

Founded by former Royal Navy officer Allen Parton, Hounds for Heroes trains specialist assistance dogs for disabled veterans and emergency services personnel, helping to restore confidence, independence and quality of life to those who've served.

Allen's own journey began with his first assistance dog, Endal, whose devotion changed his life. Today, Endal's successor ET continues that legacy by Allen's side.

We're proud to support Hounds for Heroes and help them continue with the incredible work they do for the UK's heroes. For more, visit their website: https://www.houndsforheroes.com/

Britain's pet owners proved that weather wouldn't stop them showing their local pet shop some love.

Despite Saturday 11th July being one of the hottest days of the year, hundreds of independent pet shops across the UK opened their doors for the third annual National Pet Shop Day.

From free treats and photography pop-ups to charity raffles and prize giveaways, retailers found their own ways to celebrate what makes their shop special.

Customers queued in the sunshine to show just how much these businesses mean to their local community.

We're already looking forward to next year. National Pet Shop Day returns in 2027, but for now, let’s reflect on this year’s success: https://johnsons-vet.com/national-pet-shop-day-2026-thank-you-for-proving-the-point/

This week (3rd-9th August) recognises the incredible work of assistance dogs and the trainers who dedicate their time to preparing them for life-changing roles.

Assistance dogs take many forms, such as guide dogs supporting the visually impaired, medical alert dogs sensing seizures or blood sugar changes, autism assistance dogs providing comfort and safety, and hearing dogs alerting their owners to important sounds.

These dogs undergo months, sometimes years, of specialist training before being matched with the person they'll support. The bond that forms between an assistance dog and their handler goes far beyond companionship; it's often the difference between dependence and independence.

A huge thank you and moment of celebration to all the assistance dogs and trainers who support those in need.

How the heat affects cats and what you can be doing to keep your pet safe

Cats are generally good at regulating their own body temperature, but there's more we can do to support their well-being in summer. Small changes like encouraging regular hydration and creating shaded spots around the home can make a huge difference to how they feel in the heat.

It's also important to know the signs of heatstroke, particularly for older, overweight or flat-faced cats, and to check hidden spaces like sheds and greenhouses before locking up for the day.

Our latest blog shares everything you need to know to keep your cat cool and comfortable when it's warm: https://johnsons-vet.com/keeping-your-cat-cool-and-comfortable-in-summer/

We have been making the case that restricting access to over-the-counter flea and tick treatments would create barriers for pet owners, and new research confirms who would bear the greatest burden.

Johnson's Veterinary Products has called on the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee to ensure the equalities impact of any regulatory change is properly assessed before decisions are made.

Our research, carried out among more than 2,000 UK cat and dog owners, suggests that reclassification would hit lower-income pet owners hardest. Those who can least afford an additional vet consultation are the most likely to reduce or stop treating their pets altogether.

The Committee is due to publish its findings and recommendations to the Government at the end of July or in early August. We will keep you updated as this develops.
