π©What Happened to Ratty Natty Hats? π©
Those of you who have been around for a while may already know that Ratty Natty originally started with miniature hats. They were especially popular around Christmas time with people making their own homemade Christmas cards, and I loved seeing the hats become part of people's special memoriesπβ€οΈ
(And if you've ever wondered why my Ratty Natty logo features a sewing needle and thread spools, well...now you know! π§΅πͺ‘ )
However, a few years ago I started to take a step back from the hats and lean more into the jewellery side of things. My hats were made using soft, good-quality fair trade felt, and every single one was hand-sewn by me πΏ
Despite keeping my costs as low as I could, it was becoming increasingly difficult for me to compete with the cheap, glued, stiff felt, mass-produced versions that were becoming increasingly popular on the market.
Safety was also something very important to me. I wanted my hats to be as safe as possible, so I hand-sewed them rather than using glue and refused to use toggles. This meant every hat could easily be removed by the animal if they decided they didn't want to wear it π§Ά
I also avoided using elastic for hamster hats as I didn't feel comfortable with the potential risks that came with it. And anyone who has tried to put a tiny hat on a wiggly hamster will understand it can be quite the challenge! πΉ
Of course, no accessory is completely risk-free. My hats always came with a safety leaflet explaining that they should be used under supervision, outside the cage, never forced upon an animal and for quick photo opportunities only πΈ
Whilst I may have moved away from making hats on a regular basis, I still get requests for them now and again. And as we approach spooky season, the wizard hats in particular always seem to be a popular request π π§ββοΈ
There's something special about seeing a tiny hat come together, especially when it becomes part of a special occasion or a treasured memory so I do still make them upon request πβ¨
Hope everyone has a lovely week!
Boggles & Scritches,
Natty ππ
