Our Top Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe This Firework Season!
Firework season is nearly upon us, and whilst the colourful displays might be exciting for us, for many dogs and other pets, it can be an incredibly frightening time.
The loud bangs, sudden flashes and unfamiliar noises can cause fear, stress and anxiety, so it's important to start preparing now!
Here are our top tips to help keep your four-legged friends safe and comfortable.
💚 Walk Before Dark – Try to walk your dogs earlier in the day, before fireworks are likely to start. Always keep them on a lead when out and about.
🐾 Create a Safe Space – Give your pet somewhere quiet and comfortable to retreat to. Let them choose where they feel safest and don't force them to come out.
💚 Block Out the Noise – Close windows and curtains, and put on the television, radio or some calming music to help mask the sound of fireworks.
🐾 Offer Comfort and Reassurance – If your dog comes to you for comfort, give it to them! Stay calm, be patient and never punish them for showing signs of fear.
💚 Keep Them Occupied – If your dog is comfortable enough, try offering a favourite chew, enrichment toy or tasty treat to help keep them distracted.
🐾 Check Their ID – Frightened dogs can panic and escape. Make sure your dog's microchip details are up to date and they're wearing a collar with an ID tag.
💚 Ask for Help Early – If your pet really struggles with fireworks, speak to your vet or a qualified behaviourist before the season begins. There are ways to help manage their anxiety.
🐾 Remember, every dog is different. Some may want cuddles and reassurance, whilst others prefer to hide away. The most important thing is to listen to your dog and help them feel safe.
