WILD IS WONDERFUL β€” AND IT'S EASY

We're often told tidy gardens are best β€” but "too tidy" is actually part of the problem. You don't have to let everything go wild β€” just one corner makes all the difference:

DO:

β€’ πŸͺ΅ Leave logs & leaves out β€” perfect nesting and foraging habitat

β€’ πŸ’§ Put out fresh water every night β€” especially in dry weather

β€’ 🐜 Go easy on chemicals β€” every poisoned slug could be a hedgehog's next meal

β€’ 🧹 Check before you mow or strim β€” injuries from garden machinery are sadly common

β€’ πŸͺ€ Remove hazards β€” fishing net, sports netting, and uncovered ponds are deadly traps

❌ DON'T:

β€’ ❌ Use slug pellets β€” lethal to hedgehogs

β€’ ❌ Lay astroturf β€” it destroys their habitat completely

β€’ ❌ Disturb hibernation spots November–March

It's not about being perfect β€” it's about being kinder. Every small shift adds up.

Kindness matters. 🌿✨

πŸ“… THURSDAY β€” Your Garden Can Be Their Sanctuary

πŸŒ… Morning Quick Fact

You don't need a big garden to make a huge difference. One wild corner, a log pile, fresh water, and a gap in the fence β€” that's literally all it takes. Nature doesn't need perfection β€” she just needs space. πŸŒΏπŸ¦”

LEAF PILES = NESTS β€” PLEASE BE KIND THIS NOVEMBER πŸŽ‡

When autumn arrives, hedgehogs are busy preparing to hibernate. Leaf piles, log stacks, and quiet corners are exactly what they're looking for β€” warm, dry, safe places to sleep through the cold months.

Your simple checklist:

β€’ πŸ”₯ Build bonfires only on the day you plan to light them β€” never days ahead

β€’ πŸ” Poke around thoroughly β€” use a stick to check inside before lighting

β€’ πŸ“¦ If you find a hedgehog: move it gently to a high-sided box, keep somewhere quiet, release once the fire has cooled completely

β€’ πŸŽ† Consider going to a public display β€” organised events are safer for everyone, including wildlife

β€’ πŸ‚ Leave some leaf litter undisturbed β€” it's vital shelter, not just "garden waste"

A moment of care means everyone can celebrate safely. That's what being animal lovers really means.

πŸ“… WEDNESDAY β€” Bonfire Night: Safety First

πŸŒ… Morning Quick Fact

By late October, hedgehogs are actively searching for winter nests. Piles of leaves, twigs, and brush look like the perfect hibernation home to them β€” but if we build bonfires days in advance, we're unknowingly building death traps. Build on the day, check before lighting β€” or better still, attend an organised display instead. πŸ¦”πŸ”₯

NO GARDEN IS AN ISLAND β€” NOT REALLY

One small garden is too small for a hedgehog. But ten connected gardens? That's a home range. A hedgehog highway is just a small opening at the base of your fence β€” big enough for a hog, too small for most dogs. Coordinate with neighbours, create a chain of connected gardens, and you've built a safe corridor that could save lives.

βœ… What you can do:

β€’ βœ‚οΈ Cut a small gap under your fence

β€’ πŸ—£οΈ Ask neighbours to do the same β€” one hole connects two gardens!

β€’ πŸ“ Log your highway at bighedgehogmap.org

β€’ 🌿 Think twice about astroturf β€” it might look tidy, but it removes the very ground they depend on. Plastic never fed a soul.

πŸ“… TUESDAY β€” Hedgehog Highways

πŸŒ… Morning Quick Fact

www.animalsinhands.com

A hedgehog can travel 1–2 km every single night searching for food, a mate, and nesting spots. But solid fences turn their world into isolated islands. The fix? A simple 13cm Γ— 13cm gap under your fence β€” that's it! Connect gardens together and suddenly they can roam freely. πŸ¦”πŸ›€οΈ

THE HIDDEN CRISIS IN OUR GARDENS

It's heartbreaking to think β€” in the 1950s, there were an estimated 30 million hedgehogs in the UK. Today? Fewer than 1 million remain. That's a staggering loss.

They're vanishing because:

β€’ 🚧 Fragmented habitats β€” fences, walls, and roads cut off their vital travel routes

β€’ πŸ› Fewer insects β€” pesticides mean less food; a hedgehog needs hundreds of bugs every night

β€’ 🏑 Lost nesting spots β€” and increasingly, astroturf is replacing living earth. It looks neat to us, but it's a dead zone β€” no insects, no soil, nowhere to forage, nowhere to nest. It's literally a plastic blanket over their world

β€’ πŸš— Road deaths β€” thousands killed crossing roads each year

We say we're a nation of animal lovers β€” but are we truly doing enough? If just one person reading this rethinks their choices, then we've made a start. Every garden matters. Every choice counts.
