Are you organised, friendly and great at keeping things running smoothly? We’re looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Administrator to join our team at Highland Health Vets! 🐶🐱

🕒 Hours: 37 hours per week

✨ What will the role involve?

📋 Managing insurance claims
📞 Front-of-house duties and welcoming clients
📅 Booking appointments and managing diaries
💻 General administrative duties
🐾 Helping ensure the practice runs smoothly day to day

What are we looking for?

✅ Excellent organisational and communication skills
✅ A friendly, professional and approachable manner
✅ Good attention to detail
✅ The ability to multitask and work as part of a team

🐕 Previous veterinary administration experience would be a bonus, but it’s not essential, as training will be provided!

Today, we’re looking back at the lovely coffee morning we hosted at the end of last month!💚

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped us raise money for Macmillan. It was so lovely to see our clients, friends and local community come together, enjoy a cuppa, tuck into some delicious treats and support such a wonderful cause. Together, we raised an amazing £54.20 for Macmillan!

And a special thank you to all our wonderful bakers who generously supplied the tasty treats — they certainly went down a treat!😋

🌿 HERB SPOTLIGHT: MILK THISTLE 🌿
Silybum marianum

Did you know that milk thistle is one of the herbs used in veterinary herbal medicine to help support liver health? 🐾

Milk thistle contains a group of compounds called silymarin, with silybin being one of its best-studied components.

💚 Why is milk thistle interesting?

🌿 Liver support
Silymarin has antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties and has been studied for its potential to support liver cells and protect against oxidative stress.

🔥 Inflammation & oxidative stress
Milk thistle compounds have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which is one reason they are of interest in both human and veterinary medicine.

🐶🐱 Our pets too
Milk thistle has been investigated in dogs, cats and other animals, particularly as supportive care for liver conditions. Veterinary research suggests potential benefits for liver function.

🩺 What about diabetes?
There is growing research into silymarin and diabetes. Some human studies and animal research suggest it may have effects on blood glucose, insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation. However, the evidence is still developing, so milk thistle should be considered supportive rather than a replacement for prescribed diabetes treatment.

🌱 Herbal medicine is not simply “natural = safe.”
The herb, preparation, concentration, dose and the individual patient all matter. Herbs can also interact with medications. This is particularly important for patients with liver disease, diabetes or those taking several medications.

At Highland Health Veterinary Care, we use veterinary herbal medicine as part of an individualised approach, alongside conventional veterinary care where appropriate.

🍄 Support local, shop local and read local! 🍄

Our very own vet, Dominique, has been featured in the Muir Times with an important autumnal article about mushroom toxins and our pets.

As she enjoys this lovely cosy autumn weather, reading her article in front of the fire with her two dogs, Waffle and rescue three-legged dog Trip, it’s the perfect time to remind ourselves that while autumn brings beautiful walks and an abundance of fungi, it can also bring some hidden dangers for our four-legged friends. 🐾🍂

Last year, we had an incredible case involving four family dogs who had all ingested toxic mushrooms. Within just 15 minutes of ingestion, all four required emergency veterinary care. The team at Highland Health Vets worked day and night to give these unfortunate mushroom munchers the treatment they needed. Thankfully, the outcome was a positive one. ❤️

Their owners quickly realised that something wasn’t right and rushed them to us, allowing treatment to begin without delay.

As autumn approaches, we start to see an abundance of mushrooms appearing across our countryside. Some are beautifully striking, standing proudly amongst their surroundings as if they were on parade, while others almost seem to serve as a warning to anything tempted to take a nibble! 🍄

Of course, not all mushrooms are poisonous, and for those who know their fungi, an autumn walk can be a wonderful opportunity to spot and identify the many varieties growing around us. For the knowledgeable forager, collecting a selection of edible mushrooms can even provide the perfect ingredients for a delicious Funghi Trifolati. 🍽️

However, when it comes to our four-legged friends, it’s always best to be cautious. Dogs are naturally curious, and what may look like an innocent mushroom to us could potentially be harmful to them.
