My Christmas diary is now officially open for my regular customers ❤️

Next week I’ll be opening appointments up to new and existing customers, so if you’re a regular, please don’t leave it too late! 🎅🏼

A polite little note to my XL & XXL breed customers
These appointments take me longer and are harder to fit into the diary around Christmas, so if we haven’t already discussed your Christmas appointment, this is your little nudge to drop me a message and let’s get you booked in! 🥰

Cockerpoos are one of the breeds I’ve always found really difficult to groom. 🤯

I think it’s really important to be honest and show that grooming doesn’t always come naturally, or feel easy to me with particular breeds.

And one of the things that makes Cockerpoos particularly challenging is that no two coats are necessarily the same.

Being a crossbreed, you can get such a huge variation in coat type. Some are soft and fluffy, some are curly, some are wavy, some are finer, some are incredibly dense… and some seem to have a little bit of EVERYTHING going on! 😂

That means you can’t necessarily approach every Cockerpoo in exactly the same way. You have to look at the individual coat, work out what it needs and adapt your technique accordingly.

I’m honestly SO pleased with how this groom turned out, and looking at the before and after, I feel I may have nailed my technique on Murphy….although a few tweaks can always be improved upon 😂

Mixed breed grooming, for me comes from practice, consistency, learning, making mistakes, trying again and just keeping going.

There are still grooms where I question myself, where something doesn’t quite go the way I want it to, or where I have to really concentrate to get the finish I’m looking for.

And that’s okay.

Because being good at something doesn’t mean you find it easy. It means you keep working at it until you get better. ❤️

This is proof that even the breeds I find challenging can eventually become the ones I’m proudest of. ✂️

Oliver, the fluffy frenchie who always has something to say 🔊❤️

If you’ve watched the reel, you’ll know I’ve been chatting about Oliver and his Cushing’s disease, something that has become an important part of understanding and caring for him during his grooms.

Cushing’s disease happens when a dog’s body produces too much of the hormone cortisol. It can cause things like increased thirst and hunger, more frequent urination, panting, and changes to the skin and coat.

Since Oliver was diagnosed and started medication, his owners have noticed such a difference in him, including a massive amount of growth in his fur and a complete fur colour change. 🥹❤️

It’s one of the reasons I always say that grooming isn’t just about making your dog look good. Spending regular one-to-one time with a dog means I get to know what’s normal for them, notice changes and, where appropriate, flag things up to their owners.

And Oliver? Well… he makes sure I know exactly how he feels about everything. 😂🎤

🛁 YOUR DOG ISN’T JUST COMING FOR A GROOM…

When your dog comes to me, yes, they’re here to have their coat washed, dried, brushed and trimmed…

…but before I even start grooming, I always give them a thorough little health check. ❤️

Today, while checking over one of my lovely clients, I noticed that their ear looked red and irritated.

Now, I’m a groomer, not a vet, so I can’t diagnose an ear infection. But I can spot when something doesn’t look quite right and let you know so you can get it checked.

And that’s exactly what I want grooming to be about.
Looking after the whole dog, not just the coat.

During my pre-groom check I look out for things such as:

🔎 Lumps and bumps
🔎 Sores or irritated skin
🔎 Redness or inflammation
🔎 Ear irritation or unusual discharge
🔎 Changes around the paws and between the toes
🔎 Grass seeds and foreign objects
🔎 Matted areas hiding underneath the coat
🔎 Anything else that looks unusual or different from normal

Sometimes these things are really obvious.

Other times they can be hidden underneath a coat, between the toes or inside those lovely floppy ears, and the owner may have no idea they’re there.

This is one of the reasons I always take a little time to check your dog over before getting stuck into the groom.

If I notice something I’m concerned about, I’ll tell you what I’ve found and recommend that you speak to your vet where appropriate.

I can’t diagnose or treat medical conditions, but I can be another pair of eyes looking out for your dog. 🥰

And sometimes, catching something early can make a big difference.

So when you drop your dog off for their groom, remember…

They’re not just coming for a haircut.
They’re coming to be cared for. ❤️

🌾 GRASS SEEDS 🌾

🐾 PLEASE CHECK THOSE PAWS! 🐾

Today I groomed a gorgeous Show Cocker who had a huge clump of grass seeds hiding between his toes, tangled into a piece of matting.

And it’s a really good reminder that during the summer months, it’s so important to check your dog’s paws after walks, especially if they’ve been running through long grass. 🌾

Grass seeds might look tiny and harmless, but they have sharp, pointed ends which can become trapped in fur and can actually work their way through the skin.

If a seed becomes embedded between the toes, it can cause:

🐾 Pain and irritation
🐾 Constant licking or chewing of the paw
🐾 Redness and swelling
🐾 Limping
🐾 Infection or an abscess
🐾 An interdigital swelling/cyst

And unfortunately, once a grass seed has worked its way under the skin, it can be much harder for a vet to find and remove.

So what should you do? 👇

After walks, particularly through long grass, have a quick check of:

🔎 Between every toe
🔎 Around the paw pads
🔎 The hair around the feet
🔎 Ears
🔎 Armpits and anywhere else with longer hair

If you spot a grass seed sitting in the fur and it hasn’t entered the skin, remove it promptly.

But if you notice a seed that appears embedded, or your dog is suddenly licking, chewing or protecting a paw, don’t ignore it, speak to your vet.

And if your dog has lots of feathering around their feet, keeping the area free from excessive matting can make these little hazards much easier to spot.

A 30-second paw check after a walk could save your dog a lot of discomfort. ❤️
