What is tethering? 🐕
Tethering is something I use to help nervous, anxious and overwhelmed dogs learn to find calm and feel safe.
The idea is simple — sometimes a dog doesn't need more stimulation, commands or distractions. They need to learn that they can simply do nothing and relax.
The dog sits beside me and is ignored. There is no fuss, no constant talking and no trying to distract them from how they feel.
If they break the sit or turn away, I calmly put them back beside me.
The important part is consistency.
They have to face their emotions and learn that they are safe within our bubble. Over time, they begin to understand that they don't always need to react to everything around them.
They can switch off.
They can relax.
They can trust that I have control of the situation, so they don't need to.
Sometimes the biggest step forward for an anxious dog is learning that doing nothing is okay.
