🐾 Safe & Unsafe Foods for Cats — Domestic & Stray 🐾
Whether it's your own cat at home or one of the harbour cats we help care for, knowing what's safe (and what's not) can make a real difference.
Sadly, well-meaning people often leave food out for community and stray cats that can actually cause harm — or that the cats won't even eat, but ends up attracting ants, mice, and other unwanted visitors instead!
✅ Safe in small amounts (plain, no seasoning):
🐱 Cooked chicken or turkey (skinless, boneless)
🐱 Cooked plain fish (deboned, no batter or seasoning)
🐱 Cooked eggs
🐱 A few blueberries
🐱 Plain pumpkin
❌ Never feed:
🚫 Onions and garlic (fresh, cooked, or powdered)
🚫 Chocolate, coffee, or anything caffeinated
🚫 Grapes and raisins
🚫 Bread dough or yeast
🚫 Bones — even small ones can cause choking or internal injury
🚫 Alcohol
Please don't leave food out for stray or harbour cats at all — even cat food — as it often goes uneaten and attracts ants and rodents right where the cats sleep. Volunteers already feed them daily with proper bowls and fresh water 💛

If you met a beautiful cat that lived on the streets, and you knew its name, and you'd bonded with it... would you want to help that cat have a good life? 🐾
We're guessing the answer is yes — because that's exactly how this all started for us.
Meeting cats like Buddy, Lola, and Coco during our time in Fuerteventura changed something for us. They weren't just "street cats" — they had names, personalities, and people who'd quietly cared for them for years. We've shared plenty of other harbour cats' stories here too — including sweet Pixie, Coco's long-time companion, who we sadly never got to meet ourselves before she found her forever home.
That's what led us to start working closely with Feline Aid and Caleta Harbour Cats , and it's exactly why we're building Jaffa's Cat Haven's fundraising efforts around supporting their work.
So today, we want to hear from you: 💬

Something we've been excited to share for a while now 💛
At Jaffa's Cat Haven, we're proud to be working closely with Feline Aid — the charity dedicated to helping the cats (and more!) of Fuerteventura who need it most.
A little bit of background: Feline Aid is officially registered in Spain as Sylvester's Protección Animales. When founder Debbie tried to register the charity under the name "Feline Aid," Spanish registration required it to cover more than just cats — so the charity expanded to include hedgehog rescue too, and was registered as Sylvester's, named after Debbie's very first cat. Since then, Feline Aid has remained the name used for donations, social media, and all public-facing work — so that's the name you'll see if you look them up or want to support them directly.
Feline Aid runs trap-neuter-release programmes, manages several "cat cafés" where colonies are fed and cared for, and works closely with the harbour cats we've shared stories about here (including Buddy, Lola, Coco, and Pixie). They're entirely funded by donations, and every penny goes toward alleviating suffering — vet care, food, and the ongoing work of keeping these colonies healthy. Every Wednesday, Gaynor runs an Artisan Market, featuring handcrafted items made by volunteers — with every single purchase going directly to Feline Aid.

An update on Rengar 🐾 You might remember him from our name poll a few weeks back — though in the end, none of the suggested names stuck, and he became Rengar anyway! Sometimes a cat just picks his own name for you 😄
Rengar has been settling in beautifully at Elaine's, surrounded by familiar faces — his mum Ariel, along with Willow and Bear. Willow in particular has taken a real shine to him, and it's been lovely watching him find his place within that little family.
Rengar's forever home is all lined up for August, when he'll be heading down to Plymouth to start the next chapter of his story. Until then, he's exactly where he needs to be — loved, settled, and getting all the cuddles he can handle before his big journey. 🤍

Meet Coco 🐾 one of the longest-standing harbour cats we've come to know in Fuerteventura — and today, we want to share a bit of his story, and his girlfriend Pixie's too.
Coco first appeared at the harbour around 10 years ago. Over the years he's dealt with a damaged tail and ongoing dental problems, and back in February this year, he had several teeth removed under anaesthetic. The vet warned he might be sick afterwards — and true to Coco's famously clean nature, he actually made his way into a covered litter tray to be sick, rather than anywhere else. That's just who he is.
Coco has stayed with several different volunteers over the years and has done brilliantly every time — one volunteer who fostered him said he'd make an amazing house cat, he's affectionate, easy-going, and clearly comfortable around people.
For many years, Coco had a companion at the harbour: a cat named Pixie. Pixie's story is a difficult one — she once jumped from a high roof and broke her leg, which didn't heal properly and left her with a permanent limp. She needed regular anti-inflammatory injections for arthritis, but despite her disability, she was remarkably difficult to trap for treatment.
Pixie was eventually given a home by a lady working at the harbour, but she struggled being around the other pets already there. She's since been rehomed to someone without other animals — and we're so glad she's finally settled somewhere she can be at peace.
Coco remains at the harbour, and stories like his and Pixie's are exactly why the work of volunteers, TNR programmes, and charities like Feline Aid and Sylvester's Protección Animales matters so much. 🤍

Last week I shared why cats have meant so much to my healing. This week, I want to share how Elaine came into my life — and why she felt like an obvious choice as my business partner in Jaffa's Cat Haven.
In 2023, I went through a really difficult period in my personal life. It was one of the hardest things I've ever navigated, but also one of the most important. In the middle of it, I found myself wishing for someone who could simply be there for me, steady and uncomplicated.
About 8 months later, in February 2024, I met Elaine. It was an instant connection — the kind you can't really explain. She's old enough to be my mum, and from the start, she treated me like a daughter. She has two grown sons of her own but has always said she wanted a daughter — so somehow, it just worked.
We met in 2024, but it genuinely feels like we've been friends for far longer. And beyond the personal connection, we share a real love for animals — which made bringing her on as my business partner at the haven feel like second nature.
Sometimes the people who are meant to find you do, exactly when you need them. Elaine is proof of that for me. 🤍

🐾 Why does your kitten still suckle? 🐾
You might notice a kitten sucking on a blanket, a toy, or even another cat long after they've been weaned. It looks unusual, but it's actually pretty common!
It's usually just comfort-seeking — similar to a security blanket, not about hunger. Kittens who were weaned early sometimes carry the habit a little longer, and it can also show up simply as a soothing behaviour in a new environment.
Totally normal in most cases, and just one of the many quirky things we get to share with you here at the haven. 🧡
