🐾 FOLLOW ON CLASSES AT WESTVILLES! 🐾
Start date 13th October @ 5.30

Our followon classes "Beginners Plus" are sadly not open to everyone and there’s a very good reason for that! 😉
They’re only available to people who have either: 🐶 Joined us for one of our Beginners courses
🐶 Or worked with one of our trainers on a one-to-one basis.
Why?
Because we don't believe in simply putting dogs into a class and hoping for the best! 😂
We want you to already have the knowledge and understanding of how to help your dog if they find something difficult, distracting or overwhelming. That’s something we teach throughout our Beginners courses and one-to-one training.
These classes are also NOT obedience classes!

They’re about taking the skills you and your dog have already learnt and putting them into practice in a real outdoor environment, where there are distractions, smells, other dogs, people and all the exciting things that come with being out and about!
Think of it as training in real life rather than training in a classroom. 🐕‍🦺
We want dogs to succeed, owners to understand what they’re doing, and everyone to enjoy themselves.
Because throwing a dog into the deep end isn't exactly a training plan.

Impulse Control 🐶😂

Letting a dog work through their Impulse control, is a great way of teaching your dog to be polite about what they want.

It’s not about you controlling every single thing your dog does! 😂

It’s about giving your dog the opportunity to work it out for themselves and discover which behaviour gets them the best result.

For example has your dog already worked out that if they sit, they get a treat? 🍖

Congratulations! 🎉 You’ve got yourself a negotiator!

They’ve learnt that rather than launching themselves at your hand like a starving crocodile, sitting politely gets them what they want faster.

The important bit is that they made the decision.

We’re not saying, “SIT! SIT! SIT! DON’T GRAB IT! NO! NO! NO!” while waving the treat around like we’re trying to defuse a bomb. 🤣

We’re teaching them:

I could try to grab or I could sit nicely and get the treat faster.

And when the dog works that out for themselves, that’s learning.
Just be aware that the indistinct is to get what they want and not necessarily what we would like, so be careful what you reward.

Hands Off:

There should never be a situation where you need to put your hands on your dog to physically put them into a sit or down, remember you have what they want right? hopefully they've already worked out how to make you work for them.

You should never push their bottom down, pull them into position or physically manipulate them to make them do what you want.

We want the dog to understand what we're asking and make the choice themselves.

Impulse control isn’t about stopping your dog from having impulses, it's what they do as they negotiate life.

Our goal is to help them work out what to do with those impulses.

Hold that reward and watch them negotiate the quickest way to get it ❤️

Polite dog = reward ❤️🐾

White Noise!! 🎧🐶
There's a difference between overusing cues when asking your dog to do a behaviour and simply chatting away to them.
If you keep repeating "Sit... sit... sit... SIT!", it quickly becomes white noise. Your dog learns that the first few words don't really mean anything, so why respond?
But are you like me and spend half your day talking complete rubbish to your dog? 😂
I have full conversations with Cava. I ask her about her day, tell her she's beautiful and a good girl, comment on what she's sniffing, and generally chat away as if she's going to answer me!
Dogs are brilliant at recognising the difference between everyday chatter and a cue they've actually been taught.
So who else has conversations with their dog that make the neighbours think you've completely lost the plot? 🤣

Westvilles, Carrer Espardenyers, 9, 03140 Guardamar del Segura, Alicante.

The Madhouse🐾

This is a five week course at a cost of €80 a small deposit is required to secure a place.

Dates for other classes will be announced soon.

Bringing a dog to a beginners class!!
Week one is all about assessing the dogs in the class and determining what training is needed for each individual dog.
While we do follow a structured programme from week one to week five, we also have the experience to adapt and move the goal posts when needed.
Our aim is to help you better understand your dog and their behaviour. Understanding why your dog behaves in certain ways strengthens your bond and encourages learning.
Most importantly, we want to help you and your dog enjoy a happy, social life together. 🐾

Being social isn't always about playing!
Training isn't just something you do in a separate session either.
Anyone who walks with me knows I'm always asking the dogs to do something different. It's lovely to let them run, sniff, hunt and play, but it's just as important to interact with them along the way.
Asking your dog to jump on a rock, wait, touch your hand, or simply focus on you for a moment isn't only fun it's a great way to put all that training into practice. It keeps their minds engaged, strengthens your bond, and reminds them that paying attention to you is rewarding too.
Cava, Barney and Connie showing off their rock skills... and, of course, their brilliant waits! ❤️🐶
Can't wait to start our group mountain walks again with the Dog Training Groups.

Sticky Burr Seeds!!

Are these driving you nuts?

If your dog loves charging around scrubland this time of year, they're almost impossible to avoid. Burr seeds cling to fur and can be a real nuisance, especially at this time of year.

Unfortunately, it's far too hot to put a coat on most dogs during the summer, and they're much harder to remove from long coated breeds.

If you have a long coated dog that loves foraging, you could make a simple lightweight coat from a thin T-shirt. It won't stop the burrs sticking to their legs, ears or tail, but it can help protect a large part of their body and make grooming afterwards a little easier.

The sooner you remove the burrs after your walk, the easier they are to get out before they become tangled in the coat.
Lucky for me Cava is short coated as this is a daily occurrence for us.

Secondary drowning in dogs

Sadly, because so many of us have swimming pools and live near the sea, this can be more common.

Secondary drowning (also called delayed drowning) can occur if a dog inhales water while swimming or playing in the water. The signs don't always appear immediately, so it's important to keep an eye on your dog for several hours afterwards.

Some of the Symptoms to look out for:

• Persistent coughing
• Difficulty or rapid breathing
• Pale or bluish gums
• Lethargy or unusual tiredness
• Vomiting
• Collapse or weakness

If your dog loves swimming, it's worth knowing these warning signs. If you notice any of them after your dog has been in the water, contact your vet immediately. Early treatment can make all the difference.

After all that, don't let it put you off! Swimming is a fantastic way to help cool your dog down, it's brilliant exercise, and most dogs absolutely love it.

Luna in the video is loving the water, and as you can see she's having the best time whenever she goes to the beach. Just be aware of the signs 🐾
Thank you Luna for letting me share your fun 😊

Training and having fun! 🐾

Training your dog is a journey, and like any worthwhile journey, it takes time. It should be enjoyable for both you and your dog, so slow down, be patient, and help them succeed.
Attending a class gives you the skills and guidance, but it's the relationship you build every day at home that lasts a lifetime.
These videos are from our Beginners Plus class. No one is rushing. Everyone is using calm hand signals, clear body language, and quiet verbal cues to help their dogs through each exercise.
Their consistency, patience, and calm approach are paying off beautifully. Dogs don't need us to shout they can hear us perfectly. They learn best when we communicate clearly, reward generously, and make training fun.
Progress isn't about perfection. It's about building trust, understanding, and enjoying the journey together. ❤️🐶

Real changes happen when both ends of the lead learn something new 🐾🐾🐾

Dogs, just like us, are creatures of habit. They also love attention whether it's positive or negative!
Is there a behaviour your dog keeps repeating that you'd love to change?
The good news is that it's usually not difficult to find what motivates your dog. It might be food, toys, a walk, a game, access to water, or something else they really value. By using what motivates them, we can help replace an unwanted habit with a better one.
Here's the catch.
It's often us, as owners, who find change the hardest. We keep doing and saying the same things, even though we know they aren't helping our dog.
I often meet people who want me to change their dog without changing their own routines or habits. But if what you've been doing hasn't worked for months, or even years! why would it suddenly start working now?
So, when you ask for help, be prepared to make some changes too. We can't reprogramme a dog in a single session, but we can give you the knowledge, the tools, and the ongoing support to help you and your dog succeed together.
Real change happens when both ends of the lead learn something new.

When they roll 🤢😂

Boy, Cava smelt bad! 🤢😂
Luckily, I always have my backpack with me. Inside is: • Water • Wet wipes • Poo bags • Tissues • Hand sanitiser
Every single one of them was needed for this particular occasion!
For those of you whose dogs love covering themselves in the most disgusting smells imaginable, you have my complete sympathy. I'm definitely not laughing 😂 well, maybe a little 😂😂
Angela and now clean Cava 🐾
