“MUCOUS MEMBRANE”

It is one of the quickest and most valuable clinical indicators during physical examination🩺

In this post:

☑️Normal Mucous Membrane
Should be healthy pink color
It indicates:
- Normal tissue perfusion
- ⁠Adequate oxygenation
- ⁠Stable cardiovascular function

⚪ Pale Mucous Membrane
It indicates reduced blood supply commonly seen with:
- Anemia
- ⁠Blood loss
- ⁠Hypovolemic shock
- ⁠Peripheral vasoconstriction due to pain or cold

🔴 Congested Mucous Membrane
(Dark red appearance)
It indicates:
- Hyperemia caused by early endotoxemia
- ⁠Systemic inflammation
- ⁠Sepsis
- ⁠Heat stress

🟡 Icteric Mucous Membrane
(Yellow discoloration)
Caused by elevated bilirubin levels and may indicate:
- Liver disease
- ⁠Hemolysis
- ⁠Biliary obstruction

🔵 Toxic Line
(A dark red to purple line along the gingival margin)
A classic finding in horses with ENDOTOXEMIA
It reflects impaired peripheral perfusion and is commonly associated with severe gastrointestinal disease such as colic, colitis, or septic conditions

“RINGWORM”

It’s a contagious fungal infection that affects the skin and hair of horses.

🦠 Caused by:
dermatophytes, most commonly species of Trichophyton and Microsporum.

🔍 What should you look for?

- Circular patches of hair loss
- Crusty or scaly skin
- Broken hairs
- Lesions that gradually expand
- No or mild itching

⚠️ Why should you care?

One infected horse can spread it through:
- Direct horse-to-horse contact
- Grooming tools

And yes…
Humans can get it too.

🚨 The real danger isn’t the lesion itself.
The real danger is how easily it spreads through an entire stable if not recognized early.
