It's perfectly fine if your dog prefers a little distance. Maybe your dog feels safer that way, maybe he just likes a little more peace.
Actually it doesn't even mean he doesn't like or love your kid.
He's just communicating his needs and boundaries in a peaceful way.
He can still be a wonderful family dog. 🧡

There are so many dog trainers out there, it’s hard to find the right one. I'm the perfect one for you, if

·        your dog is stressed, tense or already defensive

·        you have kids & a dog (I do, too. Not only one dog, two at least and my two kids. Oh, and a husband 😊)

·        you don’t like harsh training methods and want to treat your dog with respect

·        you search for a dog trainer with a secret passion for rescue dogs

·        you prefer a dog trainer with experience in living with defensive dogs (if you are interested in that, ask me about „Nelly“)

This is the condensed knowledge and experience of being a dog trainer, dog owner and mother - the "golden rule".
Simple and yet giving you all the responsibility. You have to be there. You need to know, see and realize when your child or your dog needs your help.
It doesn't mean you have to be interfering constantly or showing presence. No, you may be in the background, the older the child, the more distance is ok. But:
You need to be there, ready to help if needed.

It's no reason to worry when happening every once in a while. Children move unpredictably, so dogs calm themselves and our kids then.

But you must pay close attention to your dog & kid when you realize a pattern in your dog showing this or other Calming Signals! He displays stress and needs your help to ease that!

No dog's overwhelmed all of a sudden or overreacting out of the blue. There are signs of stress, uneasiness or overwhelm he shows for a long time before. Unfortunately they get overlooked easily, especially in busy family life.

When you recognize them right from the beginning, you can help your dog straight away. This brings back a lot of ease to your family life!

To know how to do that you need to seek advice from a dog trainer. Make sure she (or he) is using gentle methods and that she is experienced - there's too much at risk!

If you have this subtle feeling that your dog isn't at ease with your child, even if it’s only from time to time, act NOW. Get help for your dog and your child to make sure both are safe.

There's an easy solution. It doesn't take very long training sessions, you don't have to go somewhere AND it's a gentle and friendly way of teaching your dog how to behave.
