The pet health monitoring market looks like one category. It isn't.
We compared five of the most widely discussed devices - including Maven, FitBark, and Tractive - against our own line. The split that emerged is worth understanding if you're building or sourcing in this space.
Lifestyle and behavior trackers measure movement. They use accelerometers to infer activity, sleep, and rest. Good tools for trend monitoring. But they estimate health from behavior, not the other way around.
BCG-based monitors work differently. Ballistocardiography captures the mechanical waveform of each heartbeat directly. From that one signal: heart rate, respiratory rate, and HRV. Continuously. Not estimated from motion data.

When a dog owner visits the vet after a seizure, they usually bring three things:

In 2022, 59% of dogs assessed by US veterinary professionals were classified as overweight or obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. A major barrier to early intervention is the gap between what vets see and what owners believe - many owners of overweight pets rated their dog's body condition as normal. That gap is where brands in this space can actually do something useful.
But not by overselling the device.
If the device promises outcomes it can't guarantee, it ends up in a drawer. The client feels sold to. The return request follows.
The frame that actually holds is observation.

If you're building a pet health monitoring product, here's a distinction worth getting right before you source hardware.

Not every device that tracks respiratory rate actually measures it. The sensor architecture matters. An accelerometer counts movement. BCG (ballistocardiography) detects the mechanical forces each breath generates through the body. Those are different products, even when the packaging says the same thing.

This gap has real consequences for buyers. The dog owner whose cardiologist told them to track resting respiratory rate every night is not looking for a step counter with a health label. They know the number they need. The question is whether your device can give it to them.

A 2025 peer-reviewed study in Veterinary Sciences validated BCG against ECG in dogs under normal conditions: reliable respiratory rate data, no electrodes, no shaving, no clinic visit. That validation is what a product description in this category needs to be built on.

The product names are similar. The marketing language overlaps. The spec sheets don't explain the difference clearly enough to catch it.
Before you source anything in this category, three questions will tell you what you are actually looking at.
1. Does the device measure heart rate and respiratory rate directly, or derive those figures from movement data?
An accelerometer measures position changes. A BCG sensor measures the physiological forces the body generates with each heartbeat. Both can display a number labeled 'heart rate' in an app. Those numbers are not the same thing.
2. Does the device generate HRV data?
HRV requires measuring the interval between individual heartbeats, not average heart rate over a period. If the answer is no, the device cannot surface the early-warning signals that define this category. You are looking at a fitness tracker, not a health monitor.
3. What certification does the device carry?
CE and FCC are the minimum for market entry in Europe and North America. Their absence is a signal about production and testing standards, not just a paperwork gap.
The category is genuinely confusing. GPS trackers, activity monitors, and clinical health monitors all appear under the same search terms. The three questions above should help you understand what product you are sourcing.

If your activity tracker's biggest feature is a step count, you built a pedometer, not a health device.
A pedometer tells a pet parent what happened. It doesn't tell them what it means, and meaning is the only thing they were actually paying for.
The market for this is growing fast (multiple research firms all point the same direction, some projecting the category to more than triple by the mid 2030s), and nearly 6 in 10 dogs in the US are overweight or obese right now. Those two facts sitting next to each other are the whole business case for building pet health monitoring devices that track activity, and a lot more.
Pet parents are not waking up wondering how many steps their dog took. They wake up wondering why their beloved dog didn’t get up to greet them this morning.
Right now, most devices ship the number and skip the trend. That is the difference between a pet gadget and a pet health tool.

That is not their problem. It is a structural problem.
The animal's health history only exists between clinic visits if someone is recording it continuously. A dog with early-stage mitral valve disease can look completely fine at a 9am appointment. The resting respiratory rate that would catch a problem only shows up over multiple nights.

For a lot of those products, what that means in practice: an accelerometer tracks movement, and an algorithm flags when the dog moves less than usual.
That's useful. It is not health monitoring.
Health monitoring means measuring the body's signals directly - heart rate, respiratory rate, HRV, BCG curve data. The same kind of data cardiologists use to catch cardiac anomalies before symptoms appear. A dog can maintain normal activity levels for days while something is building. The physiological signal comes before the behavioral one does.
If you are a founder trying to decide your next product, that gap is where you make your decision. You can build a tracking device with an activity layer and market it as smart health. A lot of brands already do.
