Foliar Feeding vs. Soil Application: Which One Should Farmers Choose?

One of the most common questions among farmers is whether foliar feeding is better than soil application. The simple answer is: both are important, and they work best together.

Foliar feeding involves spraying nutrients directly onto plant leaves. Since the nutrients are absorbed through the leaves, plants respond quickly—often within a few days. This method is especially useful for correcting micronutrient deficiencies, supporting crops during flowering and fruiting, or helping plants recover from stress caused by drought, pests, or disease.

On the other hand, soil application supplies nutrients through the root system. Although it takes longer for plants to absorb these nutrients, soil application provides the essential macronutrients needed for healthy root development, strong plant growth, and long-term soil fertility.

Rather than choosing one method over the other, successful farmers use them strategically. Soil fertilization builds the foundation for healthy crops, while foliar feeding provides a timely nutrient boost during critical growth stages.

The key to higher yields is applying the right fertilizer, at the right rate, at the right time, and using the right method. When soil and foliar nutrition are combined correctly, farmers can improve nutrient efficiency, reduce fertilizer losses, and achieve healthier crops with better productivity.

Fungi are the game changer.

A new study from Chiang Mai University found that soil amended with just 15% spent oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.) substrate reduced root-knot nematode gall formation by 85-90% in chili crops. Oyster mushroom mycelium actively traps and digests nematodes using specialized loop-like structures and nematicidal metabolites, essentially hunting the very pests that devastate yields. Critically, this treatment didn’t harm soil bacterial diversity.

In fact, it boosted populations of health-promoting microbes like Actinobacteriota and Acidobacteriota. For growers looking to close the loop on mushroom cultivation, the byproduct may be just as valuable as the harvest itself.

MUSHROOM SEEDS PRODUCTION AND MULTIPLICATION:

In oyster mushroom seed (spawn) production, there are four vital generations F0, F1, F2, and F3 which refer to how many times the spawn has been multiplied from the original pure culture. Each generation moves one step further away from the original culture, and as you go higher, the risk of contamination and reduced vigour increases.

Here’s a simple explanation:

F0 – Mother Spawn (Foundation Spawn)

* This is the first spawn produced directly from a pure mushroom culture grown in the laboratory.
* It is prepared under very strict sterile conditions.
* It is not normally used to grow mushrooms for sale because its main purpose is to produce the next generation.
* It has the highest genetic purity and vigour.

Purpose: To produce F1 spawn.

F1 – First Generation Spawn

* Produced by inoculating sterilized grain with F0 mother spawn.
* This spawn is still very vigorous and clean.
* It can be used either for mushroom production or, more commonly, to produce F2 spawn.

Purpose: Multiplication and commercial spawn production.

F2 – Second Generation Spawn

* Produced from F1 spawn.
* It is widely used by commercial mushroom growers because it still has good colonization speed and yield.
* If produced under good hygiene, it performs almost as well as F1.

Purpose: Commercial mushroom cultivation or production of F3.

F3 – Third Generation Spawn

* Produced from F2 spawn.
* This is generally the last recommended generation for mushroom cultivation.
* It has a higher chance of contamination and slightly reduced vigor compared to earlier generations.
* Many professional laboratories stop at F3 and return to the F0 mother spawn to start the cycle again.

Purpose: Mushroom production only.

Why not continue to F4, F5, and beyond?

Each time spawn is transferred:

* The risk of contamination increases.
* The mushroom culture gradually loses vigour (spawn degeneration).
* Colonization becomes slower.
* Mushroom yields may decrease.
* The chance of mutations or unwanted microorganisms increases.

That is why most commercial mushroom laboratories restart from F0 after producing F3, rather than continuing indefinitely.
