Everyone's asking. With OpenAI and Anthropic racing toward trillion-dollar IPOs, AI is impossible to ignore — and investors in pet tech want to know where you stand on it.
Here's our honest take.
Nobel laureate Sir Roger Penrose argues we should call it “artificial cleverness” rather than intelligence. What systems like ChatGPT do is predict the most probable next token — one at a time — based on patterns from training data. No understanding. No meaning. Pattern completion at scale. Useful — but not intelligent in any deep sense.
That framing matters when deciding how and where to use these tools.

On photo-based pet health analysis startups: the ambition is real, but the challenge is underappreciated. You need vast amounts of labeled training data to outperform just asking Claude or ChatGPT. Slow, expensive, medically complex. The bar is much higher than it looks.
Look carefully at who’s building what you use.
In 2024, Blackstone acquired Rover for $2.3 billion. Rover then acquired Cat-in-a-Flat — founded by genuine cat lovers. Blackstone’s business is returns for investors. The people now in charge of Cat-in-a-Flat’s future are capital allocators, not cat lovers.
