Bear normally guards his Raw Miller Bones from me so I tried capturing him growling and lunging at me but unfortunately he didn’t react with me. Which is great for me but sucks as I wanted to show you his bad side!

What is resource guarding? It’s when a dog really values something and becomes protective over it.
Food and Toys are some of the most common things that dogs tend to resource guard.
Another word we use for this is: Food Aggression or Toy Aggression.

To help eliminate this behaviour you want to teach them by taking that item away they are rewarded and they also get it back. Here you will see me toss treats AWAY from his bone forcing him to get up and move so I have time to grab it.
NOTE: you will need high value treats otherwise it will be tough to get your dog away. You’ll notice in the video I’ll toss a treat to the side and he ignores it so I brought out a higher value (beef & cheese) and tossed it afterwards which forced him to get up for it.
Then before giving his bone back I gave him a treat as a thank you for letting me take what he values then gave it back to him.

Never punish your dog if they growl, that’s their way of communicating with you. If you remove the growling then they have no way of communicating which could lead to a unpredictable bite.

The key with this and any training is consistency. This isn’t something that is fixed in one day but over time. Like I mentioned I was ready to record Bear lunging and growling at me but he’s finally at that comfort point where he knows if I take it away then something tasty is coming his way OR he will get it back.

I say this is every class I teach - recall doesn’t mean end of playtime. If you only call your dog back to you when they need to come in, you’ll end up dealing with a fun game of “catch me if you can!”
To avoid this, practice calling your dog to you, give them a nice tasty treat - then send them back out to play.
Your recall will become that much better if you practice this every time you send your dog out!
