It has been two months since we lost Amanda. 💔

For those who knew and loved her, the pain of her absence has not lessened. Neither has our determination to fight for the animals and communities she cared so deeply about, or our commitment to carrying forward the work she believed in. We miss her every day, and we will continue to honour her by fighting for the change she dedicated so much of herself to.

Amanda knew that prevention was key to creating meaningful, lasting change. While responding to animals in crisis was an important part of the work she did, she recognized that rescue and emergency intervention alone was not enough to address Manitoba’s animal overpopulation crisis. She was passionate about expanding access to spay and neuter services, education, and working alongside communities to create sustainable solutions. Amanda shared that vision with Tatiana and Jennelle, and together they founded Partners in Prevention.

In the two months since we lost her, so many people have stood beside us, shared her story, donated, advocated, and helped ensure that her voice and her work do not end here. We cannot adequately express how much that support has meant during an unimaginably difficult time.

We are continuing to raise funds to hold community spay and neuter clinics in rural and underserved Manitoba communities in Amanda’s honour. Our goal is not simply to remember Amanda for the work she did, but to continue it.

We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Amanda Nobiss, a volunteer animal rescuer with K9 Advocacy Manitoba who lost her life helping dogs in a Manitoba community.

For years, animal rescue organizations, Indigenous leaders, & community members have been calling on the Manitoba government to address the root causes of the dog overpopulation crisis.

Animal Justice is proud to have joined rescue groups across the province in signing a letter urging the provincial & federal governments to take meaningful action.

Communities need sustained support, including access to veterinary care, spay/neuter programs, & community-led dog management initiatives that protect both people & animals.

On the morning of Friday July 17, the world stopped for so many. Time froze, hearts broke and tears poured. The world lost an incredible animal advocate; Amanda Nobiss. A bright light, our best friend, partner and soul sister. The three of us spent every minute together, advocating for change, working tirelessly on our mission, breathing each other’s air, and ultimately just being each other’s people.

We had too much left to do- too many big plans, goals and dreams; now we are left in disbelief that Amanda will not be physically by our side to do it.

She left this world doing the very thing she dedicated her entire world to: helping, being the voice, acting instead of just talking, caring, and building strong connections. For the last year and a half Amanda had been working on building connections with the members and Chief and Council of Sandy Bay First Nation.

Amanda visited friends she had made in Sandy Bay, often. She’d bring food, medication, vaccines, supplies, kennels, bedding, and pick up any surrendered animals that members asked for help with. Her famous last words were “I’m going to make a quick trip up to Sandy Bay” (which of course was never quick and at least a 6 hour adventure 😜)

The three of us, and particularly Amanda, built a strong friendship with Mervin, Angel and their nephew Lewis; community members in Sandy Bay who we first met in fall of 2024 at their first spay and neuter clinic. We would visit with them, laugh and talk about the animals and changes we wanted to support in the community.

Many of the comments are questioning everything she did that day, but the reality is that no one should have to fear walking anywhere—whether in a city, town, on their own property, or on reserve—and worry that without another person, a police es**rt, or someone accompanying them, they may not make it home alive.

This is not the first time someone has been mauled; adults, children and elders have lost their lives walking to school, playing in the yard, and just living their lives. Unfortunately, this won’t be the last tragedy like this if the government doesn’t step up and support the community leaders in the preventative actions needed. Which is exactly the mission we as Partners in Prevention set out to do.

In the first 24 hours following the news, we couldn’t imagine walking back into Dr. Peter Iskander’s clinic, a place that has Amanda written all over it. Her organization, our supplies, the paperwork covered in her handwriting, her shoes, and even her empty coffee cups. We knew that walking the same steps we’d walked over and over again with Amanda would hurt more than we could imagine. And it did. Yet somehow, it also felt like a warm hug—as though she was right there beside us, guiding us forward.

Amanda Nobiss, we will spend every minute for the rest of time continuing to live out our dream and purpose for you. We miss and love you with everything in us. Until we meet again, Amanda ❤️‍🩹

Yay June B. Thomas! We have been privileged to partner with June for the last year! She is an incredible voice for her community and the animals in it. On July 1st and 11th our team returns back to Roseau River to continue to support spaying and neutering in the community!

We are lucky to have you June!

MEET SCO CHANGEMAKER: JUNE THOMAS

In June, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is proudly shining a light on the people who continue to make a difference across our member Nations in honour of Indigenous History Month.

Today, we celebrate June Thomas of Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation.

For the past four years, June has opened her heart and her home to dogs and cats in need in Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation.

She first began helping animals under the name "June’s Adoptables," caring for pets that needed safety, food, and love.

What started in her home grew, as more animals were rescued and more families reached out for help.

Wanting to do even more for animals in the community, June submitted a request to Chief and Council to help create a dedicated animal shelter.

That dream became reality in March of this year, with the grand opening of Community Animal Care Services (CACS).

Hundred of pets have now been registered, with each one representing an animal that has been cared for and protected.

June continues her work as a strong animal advocate, helping with:
~Animal shelter intake
~Animal transport to rescues and veterinarians
~A pet food bank for families who need support

Her shelter also works in partnership with K9 Advocacy Manitoba to support rescue and animal care efforts.

June is also a former Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) employee, where she worked with Health Transformation. Her commitment to caring for both people and animals continues to make a difference in Roseau River.

Our team headed back to Sandy Bay last weekend and it was another great success!

63 animals spayed and neutered — a huge impact for the community 🤝

We also had lots of meaningful conversations, connected with community members, and spent time sharing education and resources. These clinics are always more than just the numbers, and we were really grateful to be welcomed back for our second clinic there.

Already looking forward to the next one!
