I have been a volunteer with many rescue groups over the last 25+ years
(SPCA, Kennels, rescues)

I love and have participated/competed in many K9 sports. Currently Mya has been enjoying tracking and scent detection as our senior fun sport and bonding time! We (husband Cory and I) currently have 1 adopted dog (Mya-husky/shep mix) and, 2 adopted cats Hope and Boots (siblings left behind starving in an apartment) all adopted in NB after being rescued by the NBSPCA. Our first family dog's Yoda, Jack and just recently my working partner of 9 years Molly have since passed on. Patience, ability, and understanding Canine Behaviour are all very important tools needed to help both the pet parent and the dog communicate their needs, but what is most important is the understanding to work at both their individual paces for long term growth. No two students are the same!! We become a family once we connect, and I challenge you for your pups whole life to create a unique bond, and love like you've never known before.

It's that time of year again where June will be focused on Megaesophagus and Myasthenia Gravis Awareness.

Did you know that the most common breed affected by this disease is the GSD, AND that there is a genetic test available to PREVENT future litters with the gene???

The test was developed by researchers at Clemson University, the test helps breeders evaluate a dog’s risk of developing or passing on the condition ... and yet still today; we still have breeders not doing the testing prior to breeding.

Awareness and Education bring change.

Do you know a dog (or cat) with Megaesophagus or Myasthenia Gravis?

Molly was the definition of a perfect dog.
The charm.
The love.
The silliness.
The devotion.
The comedy.
The fighter.

I still miss her greatly; I am so honoured and proud to have been her best friend for 9 whole years).

These past three years without her (she passed in the fall of '23) have had me in a whirlwind. I am on the outside of the storm now; Mya's loss last fall helped me realize I truly needed to grieve and let it all out. So that is what I have been working on the past 10 months. Rollo sure is providing that soft landing I needed.

Myasthenia Gravis, and Megaesophagus are not automatic death sentences. It is not an easy road, but we succeeded for 8 years and lived life (almost) to the fullest.
The only thing I would have done differently, is worked less so we could've played more.

The 'slide' in the video is exactly what we worked so hard to achieve during every single meal (snack time included).

Join us June 8th at 7pm CST for a mini Barking Presentation (via Zoom Platform)

$25

We will discuss why dogs bark, what the different barking sounds mean, prevention and management tools; plus how to help them (and you!) emotionally and physically.

Barking is one of the hardest challenges to work through; because it is SO self rewarding to the dog and usually pretty overwhelming for the human.

The call will be approximately 2 hours so we have lots of time for questions and discussion amongst the group.

Register online via the booking system under Virtual Discussion Topics!

Or simply message me.

Once registered, you will receive confirmation with the zoom link.

See you on the call!!

Did you know that typically in weeks 3 or 4 of dogs learning a new skill (humans too!!), behaviours change - sometimes for the better, and sometimes it feels like they didn’t learn anything at all. (Its been discussed many times on this page throughout the years)

The main reason is that the learner is moving from the initial acquisition phase into the real world application phase.

This can look like regression when it’s actually a normal plateau.

Behaviours you might see:
1. More reserved / fearful
2. More excited / distracted
3. More over threshold / unfocused OR
4. Exactly the same as previous weeks

You can help your dog overcome this plateau by:
1. Being calm/consistent - the brain eventually starts testing the behaviour
2. Change the motivators - new challenges are more complex
3. Add distance to distractions - the criteria has changed
4. Practice skills the dog knows well - keep life simple
5. Redirect before big behaviours take over - the new behaviour doesn’t have a strong foundation yet, and we want to enhance the new behaviours before they choose the old default behaviours
6. Motivation and Novelty change - the dog already knows what to expect and could be bored

Often we just pull the dogs through the situation, and we miss such an opportunity in the learning phase to stop and rejoice in the fact that this regression or plateau is actually indicating a change from learning to having real life skills that can be applied to most situations.

Essentially, we as trainers are looking for this plateau for our students ... because IT IS a very GOOD thing!

Enjoy a clip of Rollo grounding himself walking past a deer.
Rollo could have easily walked by the deer on the sidewalk because he was super calm, but the deer might have been worried about that.
Plus, I want to teach Rollo, sometimes life is about accommodating others; not just him.

No pulling away needed, no discussion needed, just three species sharing space together respectfully.

Comment ‘plateau’ for exercises to learn how to work through the plateau period!

Have you ever used a long line in a human emergency??

I used mine a couple years ago when my 14 year old car decided to lose its muffler on a very busy road in Winnipeg. 😅

I pulled over and tried to take the one remaining bolt off with no success. So I searched my car for a plan B and that’s when I thought to just reattach the muffler with a long line to get me to the mechanic shop.

Dog training is similar …

If one plan doesn’t work, try plan B.
Think outside the box.
Laugh about the silliness of it all.
Your dog will thank you for not being too serious and for your extra creativity; leaving perfection for another day.

🐾🐾 May 2026 Calendar Highlighter 🐾🐾

May is extra special this year because Cyan & Azure were chosen as a featured month in the Kinder Canine calendar contest.

These two incredible rescue Border Collies from Hulls Haven shows us the true meaning of resilience, joy, and heart.

Despite early orthopedic surgeries and challenges, they have lived life full speed ahead; chasing balls, loving their people, competing in agility and Rally O, and welcoming foster dogs with open paws.

Azure’s endless drive enthusiasm continues to capture everyone’s hearts.

Cyan’s gentle spirit left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to know her.
Though Cyan passed on April 4th, 2025; her legacy of love, courage, and happiness continues to shine brightly.

We’re so proud to celebrate Cyan & Azure this May.
Congratulations to wo dogs who truly raced through life with strength, joy, and a spirit no hardship could break.
