**About Jodie Fitz

gerald, LFDM-T**

I am Jodie Fitzgerald, LFDM-T, and I have been dedicated to the care and wellbeing of both humans and dogs for over 30 years. My work is grounded in a lifelong interest in holistic health, behavior, and psychology. I spent 24 years working as a nurse, where I developed a deep respect for the connection between physical health, emotional wellbeing, and lived experience. Over the past decade, I have focused this lens on dogs, becoming a Licensed Certified Family Dog Mediator® and a Dog Obedience Trainer/Instructor. I am committed to ongoing education and continually expanding my understanding of dog behavior, welfare, and individual needs. I have several years of hands-on experience caring for and working with some of the most challenging dogs entering Border Collie rescue, including dogs struggling with fear, aggression, separation anxiety, and the lasting effects of neglect or mistreatment. These experiences have shaped my calm, thoughtful, and compassionate approach. I genuinely enjoy complex cases and believe progress is always possible when dogs are supported properly. In addition to training and mediation, I have experience caring for boarding dogs in both kennel and home-based environments, always prioritizing safety, emotional wellbeing, and quality of life. My own dogs continue to be my greatest teachers. Each came with their own history and challenges, and while none are “perfect,” they are happy, resilient, and well-adapted. Together, we continue to grow and learn every day. I am dedicated to helping dogs and the people who love them live in harmony—building understanding, trust, and lasting relationships. I believe in you and your dog.

Most reactions don’t come out of nowhere.

They build.

A look away.
A pause.
A moment of uncertainty.

Then another.

And another.

Until your dog can’t process anymore.

And that’s when we see it—

The barking.
The lunging.
The pulling.

Not because your dog is trying to be difficult…

But because they’ve run out of other options.

When those early signals are missed,
dogs have to speak louder.

That’s what reactivity often is.

Not a bad dog.

A dog who wasn’t heard early enough.

And this is where things can start to change—

When we learn to notice the small moments…
we can support our dogs before they feel overwhelmed.

What’s something you’ve started noticing before your dog reacts?

𝗜𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀? 🌪️

The zoomies.
The grabbing.
The constant motion.

It’s easy to think it’s “too much.”

But it’s not bad behavior.

It’s development.

And a longer walk won’t solve it.

Young dogs don’t just need more movement—
they need the right kind of engagement.

Sniffing.
Foraging.
Problem-solving.
Structured play.

This is how they learn to process their world.

Because when you play intentionally with your dog,
you’re not just burning energy—

You’re building connection.
You’re supporting emotional regulation.
You’re helping their nervous system learn how to shift from excitement to calm.

That’s what lasts.

That’s what changes behaviour.

🐾 Because before dogs can “settle”…
🐾 they need to learn how.

Your dog is not giving you a hard time.
They’re having a hard time.❤️🩹

At Fitz Your Dog, I don’t focus on “fixing” behavior.
I focus on understanding it.

Because behavior is never random.
It’s information.

Reactivity. Fear. Aggression. Pulling. Barking. Destruction.
These don’t exist in isolation. They reflect genetics, learning history, environment, physical health, emotional state, and unmet needs.

Dogs don’t live in training sessions.
They live inside the environments and relationships we create every day.

That’s why my work centers on Total Welfare.

Using the LEGS® model and the Five Domains of Animal Welfare, I look at the whole dog — not just the symptom.

When we understand the why:
• stress decreases
• trust increases
• regulation improves
• connection deepens

There are no quick fixes.
Only deeper understanding.

If you’re ready to reduce stress and build a calmer, more connected home — I’m here.

Sometimes it’s not the big reactions we need to pay attention to.

It’s the quiet moments.

That look away…
That pause…
That moment before your dog looks back at you.

This is when your dog is processing.

Trying to understand:
• what’s happening
• how they feel
• what they should do

Before the barking.
Before the pulling.
Before the reaction…

there’s often a moment like this.

And it matters.

Because when we start to notice these small signals…
we can support our dogs before they feel the need to react.

This is communication.
Something your dog needs you to see.

There is a quiet kind of magic that happens here. 🐾

This private space in Winnipeg Beach is set up for dogs who need more than a busy class or quick advice. It is a place to sniff, explore, move, play, build confidence, and feel safe enough to be understood.

I have seen fearful dogs, reactive dogs, and deeply misunderstood dogs begin to change here — not because they were pushed, but because they were given the time, space, and support they needed.

Private one-on-one sessions are available for dogs and people who need a calmer, more thoughtful approach.

Dogs know how to dog.

The question is…
do we know how to help them?

So many of the behaviors we struggle with in dogs may actually begin with unmet needs.

Dogs were designed to sniff, explore, investigate, search, play, observe, move, and interact with the world around them. These are not meaningless activities — they are important forms of natural behavior expression and behavioral diversity.

What if some of the so-called “behavior problems” we see are actually dogs trying to meet needs the only way they know how?

This video is about looking at dogs differently.
Understanding behavior differently.
And understanding why welfare matters.

Understanding what your dog needs — mentally, emotionally, physically, socially, and behaviorally — can completely change life with your dog.

How is your dog's recall?

How is your dog's recall?

𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬.

There is nothing worse than the sinking feeling you get when a dog is running away as you call and call for them to come back.
When Hogan does this, my fear of a car hitting him or him getting lost far away, can actually make me feel very ill.

It is important to plan ahead of time and be ready for how you will deal with a dog that does not have good recall.

What Happens When Dogs Finally Get What They Need ❤️

Sometimes behavior changes don’t begin with more obedience.

Sometimes they begin with:
more sleep
more safety
more sniffing
more choice
more play
less pressure

Dogs don’t just need training.

They need opportunities to feel safe enough to be themselves.

And when their needs are consistently supported…

you often see:
• less tension
• less frustration
• more regulation
• more connection
• more calm

Not because the dog was “fixed.”

Because welfare changed.

Behavior is deeply connected to how a dog feels living in our world.

And when we start there—
everything changes. ❤️
