Your puppy jumps up...

You look at them.

You talk to them.

You push them down.

You pet them.

And without realizing it, your puppy may have just learned:

👉 “Jumping gets attention!”

For many puppies, attention itself is rewarding.

Instead, try giving attention when all four paws are on the floor.

Jumping = attention disappears.

Calm behaviour = attention returns.

Be consistent and make sure visitors follow the same rule.

Small changes like this can make a BIG difference. 🐾

Have you recently discovered that you did not adopt a Labrador...
..you adopted a tiny SHARK? 🦈😂

Puppy biting is incredibly common.

Young puppies explore the world with their mouths, they play with their mouths and they also go through teething.

Instead of constantly telling your puppy “NO,” show them what they ARE allowed to bite and chew.

Keep appropriate toys nearby and redirect them onto those when those little puppy teeth start looking for trouble.

And remember ... puppy biting doesn’t last forever!

Teaching your puppy to SIT doesn’t need to be complicated.

Try this:

1️⃣ Hold a treat close to your puppy’s nose.

2️⃣ Slowly move the treat upward and slightly back.

3️⃣ As your puppy follows the treat with their nose, their bottom will naturally move toward the floor.

As soon as they sit, mark the behaviour with a happy “YES!” and reward them.

Keep training sessions SHORT.

A couple of successful minutes is much better than continuing until your puppy gets bored or frustrated.

Training should feel like a game. 🐾

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting... and sometimes a little overwhelming! 😂

You really don’t need to buy every puppy product you see.

A few basics will cover most of what you need:

🐾 A properly fitted harness or collar
🐾 A good training leash
🐾 Small training treats
🐾 A safe enrichment toy
🐾 Food and water bowls
🐾 A crate or safe sleeping area
🐾 Potty-training supplies
🐾 LOTS of patience ❤️

The first few days should be about helping your puppy feel safe, establishing a routine and beginning good habits.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Picking Up Your Puppy

Picking up a puppy seems simple, but there are definitely a few things you want to avoid!

🐾 Don’t lift them by their front legs
🐾 Don’t let their back end dangle
🐾 Don’t grab them suddenly
🐾 Don’t hold them loosely where they could jump or fall
🐾 Be extra careful when children are holding them

The safest way is to support both the puppy’s chest AND their back end so their body feels secure.

Young puppies are still developing and can also be surprisingly squirmy, so keep them close to your body when carrying them.
