Happy Labour Day Weekend from Colin's K9 Care

Did you know that Labour Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year for dog boarding and daycare? 🐶🏡

While their humans are squeezing in one last summer getaway, dogs get their own little vacation — new friends, endless playtime, belly rubs, and a whole lot of tail wags! ❤️🐾

🐕‍🦺 Fun fact: Black dogs that look very similar can actually be harder for humans to tell apart than dogs with different coat colours—but dogs themselves rely much more on smell than appearance. So two nearly identical-looking black Labs may look like twins to us, while to each other they smell completely different! 👃🐾

The last few months has been super busy with back to back bookings at Colin's K9 Care This week, we had a small break of 2 days with just Minnie and Shadow at home. It felt different but I think everyone is enjoying the small break. Shadow seems a little bored in the morning but she has formed a solid bond with her big sister who she respects and loves very much.

Today is Kings last day at Colin's K9 Care
Shadow and King have played hard the last 20 days and I’m sure they can’t wait to see each other again.
🐾 Fun fact: When dogs play together on their final day, they often don’t understand that it’s a “last day” the way humans do. They simply enjoy the familiar smells, play patterns, and companionship they’ve built together.

That’s part of what makes those final play sessions so beautiful: to the dogs, it’s just another day of being best friends. ❤️🐶

Today, we reached a milestone with King. A zero pull walk. Here he is strutting his stuff and not pulling on the leash. We’ve tried a few methods but eventually found one that works and now he’s walking next to me like a champion and not pulling me off my feet. Super happy with the progress.

This past week we’ve had the opportunity to look after King the golden and Lloyd the excitable puppy. Both are here for their first visit and it has been a challenge getting to know their personalities and what drives them. Treats is always a great way for everyone to get what they want as long as I get what I want, time to sit down and have a cup of coffee.

🐶 Fun fact: Giving your dog a small treat in the morning can become part of their daily routine—and dogs are surprisingly good at keeping track of routines! Their internal body clock and learned associations can have them waiting by the treat jar around the usual time, even before you reach for it.

And there’s a bonus: a little morning treat paired with calm affection can reinforce positive behaviour and connection, making the start of the day something your dog genuinely looks forward to. 🐾☀️

🐶 Fun fact: Labrador puppies and Golden Retrievers are both retriever breeds, so they often have a natural “let’s play!” instinct with each other. Their play can look absolutely chaotic—chasing, wrestling, play-bowing and gentle mouthing—but those exaggerated movements are actually how dogs communicate, “I’m playing, not fighting!” 🐕💛

And when a Lab puppy plays with a Golden, you’re basically watching two professional retrievers forgetting they’re supposed to be professionals. 😂

🐕 Fun fact: Golden Retrievers may howl at sirens because they’re responding to the high-pitched sound as if it’s another dog calling out! Dogs don’t necessarily understand that the sound is coming from a vehicle—they may interpret the siren as a distant canine “howl” and instinctively answer back. 📢🐺

And some Goldens are especially dramatic about it… despite having absolutely no idea what they’re supposedly howling back to! 😂
